Under the direction of our VP of Design, Catalyst Exhibits is seeking a strategic and experienced Design Director . The ideal candidate will be focused on leading, growing and mentoring our entry to intermediate designers. This role is less about hands-on design work and more about team leadership, project oversight, and interdepartmental coordination . The ideal candidate will bring a blend of industry knowledge, people management skills, and an understanding of design and production processes.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Development
Manage, mentor, and develop a team of designers, and visualization professionals.
Set clear expectations, conduct regular performance reviews, and foster a culture of accountability and growth.
Identify skill gaps and provide training or hiring recommendations to ensure team capability aligns with business needs.
Project Oversight & Workflow Management Oversee the assignment and prioritization of design projects to meet client deadlines and budget constraints.
Monitor design timelines, workload distribution, and resource allocation to ensure efficiency and quality.
Act as the escalation point for design challenges or bottlenecks and provide strategic solutions.
Cross Department Collaboration Serve as a liaison between the design department and sales, project management, and production teams.
Ensure design concepts are aligned with client goals, brand standards, and manufacturing capabilities.
Facilitate kick-off meetings, design reviews, and post-project evaluations with internal and external stakeholders.
Process Improvement & Strategic Planning Evaluate and refine design workflows, tools, and software usage to streamline processes.
Establish and document design standards, guidelines, and best practices.
Collaborate with leadership to align design strategy with broader company goals and growth initiatives.
Qualifications 7+ years of experience in a creative or design-related field, with at least 3 years in a leadership or management role.
Experience in trade shows, events, or experiential marketing industries preferred.
Strong organizational and project management skills with a proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
Familiarity with design and production processes (e.g., CAD, 3D modeling, rendering, fabrication).
Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills; able to inspire and lead a creative team while coordinating with technical and client-facing teams.
