Essential Job Duties NC State is seeking an editor in chief (EIC) for the award-winning NC State Magazine to lead strategic and operational aspects of the magazine—from big-picture, long-range planning to all phases of the magazine cycle, with oversight of the magazine team and collaboration with university leadership and the University Communications team. The EIC will strengthen alumni, campus and Wolfpack communities through the magazine, showcasing voices of alumni, faculty/staff and students.
Editorial strategy (30%)
Develop, execute, and refine NC State Magazine\'s editorial strategy in fulfillment of the University\'s mission.
Strengthen credibility as a trusted information source and reinforce alumni connection to the University.
Cultivate the magazine\'s character, style, voice and aesthetic.
Audience strategy (20%)
Know the audience and deepen understanding of their interests and needs.
Expand reach by optimizing existing channels and exploring new ones.
Operations (20%)
Plan print editions (three per year), the website, digital content, and special projects.
Develop and edit story ideas; work with writers on information gathering and copy editing.
Oversee presentation with art direction, headlines, captions and display copy.
Lead a high-performing team and manage staff engagement.
Hold P&L responsibility for NC State Magazine.
Collaboration with University Communications (20%)
Build trust with university leadership and serve as key contact for University Communications.
Coordinate with stakeholders and respond to crisis-related timing and publication as needed.
Surface issues to leadership for resolution when conflicts arise.
Management (10%)
Demonstrate integrity and diplomacy; foster inclusivity and engagement; support new initiatives as priorities evolve.
Maintain strong interpersonal, writing and presentation skills.
Other Responsibilities Other tasks may be assigned based on organizational needs and evolving priorities.
Qualifications Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor\'s degree and three years of relevant experience, including at least one supervisory role; or equivalent combination. All degrees must be from accredited institutions.
Other Required Qualifications
Prior journalism, publishing, marketing communications, or advertising experience, preferably in higher education.
Direct experience with NC State Magazine editorial cycles.
Experience contributing to strategic direction and operations of NC State Magazine, including print and digital editions.
Skills in planning and budgeting, creativity, writing and editing, design, web/digital media, and project management.
Excellent grammar and AP style knowledge.
Leadership experience with coaching and developing a high-performing team.
Advanced proficiency with MS Office and project management tools; ability to adapt to new technologies.
Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and deadlines.
Working knowledge of Mac OSX and Windows; ability to work independently and exercise initiative.
Integrity with confidential information; strong interpersonal and listening skills.
Design sensibility with reader-first focus.
Preferred Qualifications
Understanding of the land grant, Tier One university environment.

A valid North Carolina Driver\'s License is required within 60 days of start date and must be maintained.
