Overview
Expected to begin Fall 2026, this tenure-track position will be responsible for teaching undergraduate courses in creative writing and literature. Occasional teaching in the first-year writing program is also expected. The candidate will also help support our literary magazines, North Star and Saranac Review, advise students, and contribute to departmental and university service while publishing in the candidate’s area(s) of specialization. The successful candidate may be asked to teach courses in a distance learning format. The department is home to the English major including its three concentrations in Literature, Creative Writing, and English Language Arts, the college’s First-Year Composition program, minors in English and Film Studies, and a Professional Writing certificate. We are part of the School of Arts & Sciences which provides excellence in learning opportunities for all students at SUNY Plattsburgh through a core liberal arts education. Responsibilities
- Teach undergraduate courses in creative writing and literature; occasional teaching in the first-year writing program.
- Support literary magazines North Star and Saranac Review; advise students; contribute to departmental and university service; publish in the candidate’s area(s) of specialization.
- Potentially teach courses in a distance learning format.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- MFA in Creative Writing
- Record of publication of poetry
- Experience leading poetry workshops at the undergraduate level
- Experience teaching literature courses at the undergraduate level
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with faculty, staff and administrators
Preferred Qualifications:
- MA or PhD in English
- PhD in Creative Writing
- Experience teaching multiple genres of creative writing at the undergraduate level
- Peer reviewed scholarship in literature or the teaching of literature
- Experience working on a literary magazine
- One book of poetry, published or under contract with an established press
Salary
Salary: $60,000 minimum, plus excellent benefits
