Overview

The Editor, Newsroom Development and Support position at The New York Times guides the Newsroom Development and Support (NDS) team to evolve internal tools and practices that empower journalists to produce their best work. This hybrid role is based in New York City with regular in-office attendance as required by department guidance.

The NDS team comprises two groups: editorial development, which designs training programs and curricula on topics from clear writing to effective tagging; and the newsroom technology group, which focuses on internal and external tools including publishing, planning, and data management and serves as a liaison to product, design, and engineering teams.

You will lead a team that includes journalists, technologists, trainers, and project managers to transform newsroom workflows and ensure the newsroom can produce high-quality journalism with strong independence and trust in the mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee a team that trains journalists, optimizes the user experience of internal tools, and facilitates the creation of features and systems to measure progress against goals.
  • Collaborate with teams with specialized expertise to facilitate training in media, including video and tools like AI.
  • Uphold and demonstrate support for journalistic independence and the mission of seeking the truth.
  • Report to a Deputy Managing Editor and an Assistant Managing Editor.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience managing people whose portfolio includes media innovation.
  • Experience managing teams with differentiated skills.
  • Experience playing a key role in operational and technical transformation.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the technical underpinnings of the publishing toolkit.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with teams that produce a range of media and with people at different levels of an organization’s hierarchy.
  • Strong emphasis on communication and collaboration.

Compensation and Benefits

The annual base pay range for this role is between $200,000 and $230,000 USD.
