Summary
AIP is looking for an Editor, Senior Associate to join our Physics Today Team. Physics Today is the flagship publication of AIP, with a broad readership and deep reach across the physical sciences. The Senior Associate Editor edits feature articles, writes news stories about significant research advances, and produces other content for the magazine, website, and related outlets. The role involves developing a deep understanding of the physical sciences community and PT audiences to produce relevant, valuable content aligned with PT’s mission.
What you’ll do
- Develop and edit feature articles by subject-matter experts.
- Identify, evaluate, and pitch story ideas about noteworthy research developments across the physical sciences.
- Write clear, engaging news stories of varying lengths and contextualize them for PT’s audiences.
- Identify and develop relevant graphics and other media to leverage digital storytelling opportunities.
- Assist with audience development and engagement, attend scientific meetings, and maintain broad contact with members of the physical sciences community.
- Contribute to and advance the overall editorial effort of PT.
What you’ll bring
- A graduate degree in physics or a closely related field; a PhD is preferred.
- A solid understanding of the scientific enterprise.
- 3+ years’ experience in science writing and editing; experience at a journalism outlet strongly preferred.
- Exceptional talent for storytelling and for explaining complex physics topics to a broad audience of scientists.
- Excellent critical-thinking and communication skills; ability to learn quickly and independently.
- Ability to work well with others, inside and outside the organization.
- Ability to multitask, handle multiple assignments and priorities, and meet deadlines.

Compensation
$70,320.00 - $77,352.00

AIP embraces a flexible hybrid work environment balancing in-person collaboration with remote work. The team operates on a flexible, hybrid schedule and reports to offices in College Park, MD and Washington, DC as needed. Employees should reside in the DC Metro region (Maryland, Virginia, or Washington, DC).
