Overview
Are you a morning person passionate about providing access to Library customers? The L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library is seeking a safety-minded and detail-oriented Van Driver to help provide access to library materials. As a Van Driver, you will drive the library's minivan to retrieve materials from the 10 book drop locations around Eau Claire and return them to the library, plus additional duties. The Library is looking for candidates who are reliable, courteous, safety-minded, and able to work independently. Ideal candidates will have an excellent driving record and be comfortable working in a physical environment with varying weather conditions, including frequent lifting, bending, and squatting.
We have 1 part-time non-exempt position available, averaging 15 hours per week. The starting wage is $16.20 per hour and includes a paid floating holiday. The proposed schedule is Monday-Friday from 5:30 AM until 8:30 AM, with occasional Saturdays.

Summary
The Van Driver performs duties related to the retrieval, delivery, and processing of returned library materials.
Education/Experience/Testing Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent is required.
Qualifications
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Possession of a valid Wisconsin driver’s license and the ability to maintain a good driving record to ensure safe operation of library vehicles.
- Ability to operate a van on assigned routes skillfully, safely and in accordance with traffic laws and regulations to ensure safe and timely operation.
- Ability to make good judgments about weather conditions, road conditions and vehicle capacity and make changes in daily route or schedule based on those factors.
- Ability to understand and perform library policies and procedures.
- Initiative and ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work accurately with attention to detail.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with staff and the public.
Essential Functions

- Drives library van following an established route and schedule.
- Keeps written records related to vehicle mileage and departure and arrival times.
- Picks up materials at off-site sites around Eau Claire. Loads, transports and unloads materials.
- Processes returned materials including emptying the Automated Materials Handling System, inspecting, checking in and sorting materials.
- Packs/unpacks incoming/outgoing library courier shipments.
- Completes other deliveries and vehicle transportation as required.
- Maintains a clean library vehicle through regular cleaning.
- Performs cleaning and minor maintenance on off-site book drops to keep them in good operating condition.
- Communicates effectively, professionally and honestly with all Library staff and Library visitors, including both written and verbal communications, following Library procedures as needed.
- Maintains prompt, predictable, and regular physical attendance.
- Responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and orderly public space within the library building and grounds.
- Contributes to a positive, team-oriented work environment by being helpful, respectful, and approachable to both staff and the public.
Nonessential Functions
- Performs minor vehicle maintenance to keep vehicles in good operating condition.
Work Environment/Physical Demands
Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of 25-50 pounds is required. The employee must occasionally move (pull or push) book trucks with up to 200 pounds of materials. Frequent and repeated walking, standing, sitting, climbing, reaching, bending, squatting, and twisting motions are required. This position will work in heat, cold, wet, and slippery conditions.
Language Skills
Must be able to read, write, give, follow, and comprehend verbal and written instructions.
