Overview

Harris County Public Library (HCPL) is a library system established in 1921 and serving unincorporated Harris County and cities without independent library systems. HCPL has grown to 26 branch libraries, two technology service centers, and two partner locations, delivering collection and circulation services. HCPL received the National Medal for Museum and Library Service in 2024 for innovative initiatives and is recognized as a supportive place to work.

What you will do at Harris County Public Library

This position is responsible for creating programs for youth, providing customer service, reader’s advisory, and basic reference service. Exemplify high standards and expectations for the library system in daily operations and services.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide customer service, reader’s advisory, and basic reference service within and beyond the library walls
  • Develop and implement programs for the community
  • Promote library services to all ages in the community
  • Collaborate with the branch team to develop, implement, and market programs in the library and community, including summer reading programs, early literacy initiatives, Family Place, and other special events
  • Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with local schools and community organizations
  • Develop an engaging and attractive library collection
  • Attend staff meetings, activities, and professional conferences and actively serve on committees
  • Provide essential after-school programs and services for school-age children in an enriching environment
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Evidence of education and experience as described below (see Additional Requirements and Education & Experience)

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with one year of program experience and one year of customer service experience, or
  • Associate degree in any field or 60 hours of college credits with three years of program experience and one year of customer service experience, or
  • High school diploma or GED with five years of program experience and one year of customer service experience

Additional Requirements

  • Available and reliable transportation for work-related duties
  • Unofficial copies of transcripts required along with the application

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Proficient with social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.)
  • Proficient with the Internet and Office 365
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and foster teamwork in a diverse environment
  • Ability to work well with the public and staff
  • Ability to exercise initiative and discretion
  • Must use personal mobile device for Multifactor Authentication process

Experience

  • Experience working with youth groups is preferred

Language

  • Bi-lingual is preferred

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work

  • Full-time | Regular
  • Typical shifts include Day, Evening, Nights, Weekends
  • May require attending meetings, council sessions, or after-hours events and off-site meetings

Salary

  • Paid Biweekly

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • Professional office environment with overhead lighting and long periods of screen time
  • Daily use of computer, keyboard, copier, scanner, printer, calculator, and phone
  • Software usage includes Microsoft Office Suite and GPS
  • May work in outdoor environments with exposure to weather or temperature changes
  • Driving required; reliable transportation for work duties
  • Physical activity includes sitting for long periods and light movement; lifting up to 25 pounds, occasionally up to 40 pounds

  • Supervises: None
