About The Position

As the staff writer for InStyle's News & Deals business, you will pitch and write shopping stories at the intersection of fashion, beauty, and celebrity.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter who is passionate about shopping and product recommendations, especially in the fashion and beauty space. You have your finger on the pulse of what's new and trending, plus what will resonate with readers from a commerce perspective. You are able to write and edit on tight deadlines based on the news and sales cycle and can be flexible when it comes to daily assignments, being able to seamlessly pivot from task to task while still upholding brand style/voice and creating quality content.

This is a full-time position with a competitive salary commensurate with experience. Writers must be based in the U.S. and be comfortable working near a Dotdash Meredith office (NYC, Des Moines, LA, Chicago).

Responsibilities

  • Pitch and write at least 2 commerce articles per day that generate affiliate revenue
  • Identify and carry out commerce content opportunities within the beauty, style, and celebrity categories
  • Monitor social media (TikTok, Instagram, etc.) for commerce opportunities including celebrity recommendations and viral products
  • Use data and analytics to brainstorm and guide content decisions
  • Collaborate closely with numerous writers and editors on the InStyle commerce team along with editors on the InStyle edit team
  • Build own content within the CMS
  • Attend weekly editorial meetings as needed/determined by manager

About The Team

The InStyle News & Deals team is looking for a staff writer to write, update, and edit affiliate shopping content in the beauty and style space. The ideal candidate is an experienced, savvy digital editor who is familiar with news-centric commerce and able to work comfortably in a fast-paced environment.

You will be responsible for pitching and writing timely short-form stories, updating prices, copy, and headlines on select content—including single product reviews and roundups—and assisting with other editorial, strategy, and operational tasks as determined by manager.

Position Contributions

  • 40% Writing 1-2 stories a day to help meet velocity goals
  • 40% Pitching, identifying coverage opportunities/content gaps, and pulling competitor research
  • 20% Update InStyle stories for accuracy and freshness, plus other tasks as determined by your manager

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor's degree; preferably in Journalism or Communications; or equivalent experience.

Experience:

  • 2+ years writing or editing experience at an online publisher, ideally in the beauty & style space.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, Certifications and Abilities:

  • The ability to use data to identify topics of interest to a wide audience
  • Proactive, flexible team player that's able to meet deadlines and work in a fast-moving environment
  • Outstanding organizational skills and innate ability to pay attention to detail
  • The ability to work quickly, efficiently, and independently and collaborate with both remote editorial workers and in-house editorial team members
  • Strong writing, research, and self-editing skills
  • Mastery of written English and ability to edit stories based on style guides and with platform optimization top of mind
  • Experience working with content management systems

Pay Range

Salary: New York: $64,350.00 - $72,000.00; California: $68,640.00 - $70,000.00

The pay range above represents the anticipated low and high end of the pay range for this position and may change in the future. Actual pay may vary based on location, experience, and performance. The range is one component of People Inc.'s total compensation package, which may include bonuses, and short- and long-term incentives. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, PTO, 401K with company match, and other offerings depending on location.
