Overview

Wireless Radio Systems Engineer – Sunnyvale, California, United States

Hardware

Summary

Role Number: 200575153-3956

At Apple, we work every day to craft products that enrich people’s lives. As a member of our Wireless Silicon Design group, you will have the opportunity to contribute to future products that delight millions of Apple customers.

Join Apple’s growing wireless silicon development team. Our wireless SOC organization handles all aspects of wireless silicon development, addressing complex usages, performance, and reliability to enable emerging wireless applications and products. Our goals are to innovate architectures and protocols, integrate systems and algorithms with advanced technologies, and evolve our products.

In this technical role, you will be at the center of a silicon design group with impact on radio architecture, radio system performance, system integration, and physical layer algorithm designs for innovative wireless communication systems. You will develop system models of RF/analog design, radio chain modeling, integrated radio interaction models, dynamic behavior models, and assess related impairments. You will evaluate radio performance across applications and develop calibration and correction methods for radio impairments.

You will collaborate with hardware digital designers and architects, product teams, radio and analog designers, and software engineers to define and specify wireless systems. You will work with digital designers to realize PHY/radio algorithms with power- and area-efficient implementations, and with firmware designers to implement high-efficiency software for PHY/radio algorithms, potentially with hardware acceleration. You will bring up, test, characterize, and optimize real silicon in the lab to production quality.

Description

Core responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Design radio models for the wireless communication system and RF/analog impairments. Develop methods/algorithms to alleviate impairments via calibration, pre-equalization, canceller, and/or pre-distortion techniques.
  • Evaluate radio performance in different scenarios through quantitative analysis and link simulations.
  • Collaborate with radio designers to develop state-of-the-art radio architectures.
  • Collaborate with digital designers to implement PHY/radio algorithms with power- and area-efficient digital implementations.
  • Collaborate with firmware designers to implement PHY/radio algorithms with high-efficiency software, and possibly with hardware acceleration.
  • Take responsibility for bringing up, testing, characterizing, and optimizing real silicon in the lab.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BSEE with 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Understanding of RF and analog components/modules in wireless systems, possible impairments, and corresponding calibration and impairment reduction methods/algorithms.
  • Consistent track record of RF calibration algorithms for RF impairments.
  • Experience with MATLAB, Python, and/or C/C++ for algorithm development, modeling, and simulation.
  • Hands-on lab testing and characterization experience (e.g., spectrum analyzer, signal generator, signal analyzer, power meter).

Preferred Qualifications

  • MSEE/PhD with relevant experience.
  • Understanding of communication theory, information theory, and signal processing algorithms.
  • Analytical capability to develop best-in-class solutions for physical layer design in terms of performance, power, and area.
  • Knowledge of wireless protocols: Cellular technologies (5G-NR/LTE/WCDMA/GSM), WiFi (802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax/be/ad/ay) or Bluetooth/BLE.
  • Circuit design experience or knowledge.

Pay & Benefits

Base pay range for this role is between $181,100 and $318,400, determined by skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Apple offers additional compensation programs, comprehensive medical and dental coverage, retirement benefits, product discounts, education reimbursement, and opportunities for discretionary bonuses or relocation where applicable.
