Overview

Wireless Radio Systems Engineer

San Diego, California, United States

Hardware

Role within Apple’s Wireless Silicon Design group with opportunities to address radio architecture, system performance, and PHY layer algorithms for innovative wireless communication systems across silicon designs.

In this technical role, you will be at the center of a silicon design group, collaborating with HW digital designers, product teams, Radio, analog designers, and SW engineers to define and specify wireless systems. You will develop system models of RF/analog design, radio chain modeling, integrated radio interaction models, and calibration/correction methods for radio impairments. You will evaluate radio performance across application scenarios and work on calibration and correction techniques for impairments. You will bring up, test, characterize, and optimize real silicon in the lab toward production quality.

Responsibilities

  • Design radio models for the wireless communication system and RF/circuits impairments, and develop methods/algorithms to alleviate impairments through calibration, pre-equalization, cancellers, and/or pre-distortion techniques.
  • Evaluate radio performance in different scenarios by quantitative analysis and link simulation.
  • Collaborate with radio designers to conceive state-of-the-art radio architectures.
  • Work with digital designers to realize PHY/radio algorithms with power and area-efficient digital implementations.
  • Work with firmware designers to realize PHY/radio algorithms with high-efficiency software implementations, and possibly with hardware acceleration.
  • Responsible for bring-up, testing, characterization, and optimization of real silicon in the lab.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS and a minimum of 3 years relevant industry experience.
  • Understanding of RF and analog components/modules in wireless systems, potential impairments, and calibration/impairment reduction methods/algorithms.
  • Proven track record of RF calibration algorithms for RF impairments.
  • Experience with MATLAB, Python, and/or C/C++ for algorithm development, modeling, and simulation.
  • Hands-on experience with lab testing and characterization (e.g., spectrum analyzer, signal generator, power meter, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications

  • MSEE/PhD with relevant experience.
  • Understanding of communication theory, information theory, and signal processing related algorithms.
  • Analytical capability to develop best-in-class solutions for performance, power, and area in physical layer design.
  • Knowledge of wireless protocols: Cellular technologies (5G-NR/LTE/WCDMA/GSM), WiFi (802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax/be and ad/ay), or Bluetooth/BLE.
  • Circuit design experience or knowledge.

Pay & Benefits

Base pay ranges from $139,500 to $258,100, determined by skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Apple employees may participate in discretionary stock programs and stock purchase plans. Benefits include comprehensive medical and dental coverage, retirement benefits, access to discounted products and services, and education-related reimbursement. Relocation considerations may apply.
