Report to: Associate Director - SEO Career

Compensation: $30/hour

Location/Hours: This is a part-time, remote position. Access to our office location and event attendance is optional. This role requires a commitment of at least 5-10 hours per week with weekend and evening availability to support program participants who are full-time students or pursuing internships. The ideal minimal commitment is 6-12 months.

ABOUT SEO

Founded in 1963 during the Civil Rights Movement, SEO closes educational and career opportunity gaps for 7,000 ambitious young people annually. SEO Career recruits and prepares high-achieving undergraduates for summer internships in corporate America, including Wall Street, commercial real estate, and technology, with more than 80% leading to full-time jobs.

POSITION OVERVIEW

SEO Career Mentors leverage industry experience to support pre-professionals as they prepare for the internship interview process (Phase 1: Edge) and during the internship experience (Phase 2: Success).

  • Phase 1: Edge - support preparation for the internship interview process
  • Phase 2: Success - support a cohort of interns through pre-internship coursework and internship success, including post-internship offer process
  • SEO Hire - support graduating seniors (without offers) or recent alumni (1-2 years’ work experience) through the interview process

Mentors are assigned to a cohort within one of four career tracks.

Career Track: Alternative Investments & Investment Banking (AIIB)

Key responsibilities

  • Establish relationships with undergraduates to advise, support, and motivate them toward their career goals.
  • For Edge, conduct practice interviews and provide feedback for internship opportunities in Insurance roles including Actuarial Science, Underwriting, Sales, and related functions.
  • For Success, support a cohort of interns through pre-internship coursework and activities to prepare for the insurance industry.
  • For Success, provide coaching and mentoring during the internship and in navigating the post-internship offer process.
  • For SEO Hire, conduct practice interviews with candidates.
  • Document and provide detailed inputs regarding participant interactions in SEO’s systems.
  • Contribute to SEO’s training curriculum (e.g., webinars, panel discussions, content/speaker identification).
  • Attend regularly scheduled specialist meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum of 2 years of work experience in a related role, preferably actuarial science or underwriting.
  • Experience in coaching and development of students, peers, or professionals is highly desirable.

COMPETENCIES & SKILLS

  • Understanding of the insurance industry, employment trends, and factors affecting success.
  • Knowledge of barriers to entry and opportunities for early career professionals in corporate America.
  • Ability to build rapport and trust with students in a engaging and beneficial manner.
  • Professional, meaningful, and supportive communication with college students and SEO colleagues.
  • Ability to influence and motivate participants to meet objectives.
  • Ability to work evenings and/or weekends.
