Overview
UI Heart and Vascular Center is seeking a 100% Nurse Clinician to support the Electrophysiology (EP) Device Team. The Nurse Clinician serves as a clinical expert and care coordinator for EP Device patients, collaborating with physicians, patients/families, UI Health Care staff and health care agencies. Responsibilities include in-person and remote device checks, patient education, follow-up care for diagnostic and surgical procedures, and maintaining open communication with health care units involved in the care of cardiac implantation patients.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with nursing, medical staff and other health professionals to develop, review, and evaluate patient care standards for EP device patients. Provide direct nursing care when necessary and follow universal precautions.
- Manage patient flow through the EP Device Clinic. Perform device checks for in-clinic patients.
- Conduct in-person and remote device checks. Access remote monitoring device websites, analyze transmissions, complete remote transmission reports, and communicate alarm conditions, abnormal heart rhythms, or device function changes to the appropriate physician in a timely manner. Organize the EP Device Clinic and ensure patient tracking and billing are accurate.
- Independently perform in-clinic device checks, identify device issues, and troubleshoot under supervision of the ordering provider.
- Coordinate and facilitate patient care across multiple disciplines and settings (UI Health Care and community, including home health agencies and referring physicians) to ensure continuity of care.
- Coordinate patient care through pre-visit testing, follow-up on results with patients and physicians, obtain medical histories, schedule follow-up appointments, and provide medication and disease education. Participate in ongoing management to facilitate timely care.
- Facilitate care for EP Device patients requiring admission, coordinating admission procedures and pre/post-procedure care.
- Act as a clinical resource for EP Device patient populations regarding condition and age.
- Participate in the implementation and requirements of managed care programs for EP Device patients.
- Communicate autonomously with health care team members and across settings to direct patient care and ensure continuity of care.
- Communicate with referring physicians and health care facilities; perform telephone triage within established protocols and facilitate medication refills as needed.
- Provide cross-coverage for other UI Health Care Center Nurse Coordinators as needed.
- Perform clinical duties, participate in special projects, and support other tasks as needed.
- Design and implement patient/family health education activities for EP Device patients, recognizing individualized needs.
- Provide patient education in EP Device clinics, assess learning needs post-op, and deliver education related to diagnosis, procedures, risk factor modification, and treatment regimens.
- Support learning and provide consultation to external agencies, communities, and other health care professionals.
- Support development and evaluation of staff education and orientation programs, including those related to transplant.
- Facilitate the educational experience for health care students and monitor the care delivered.
- Act as patient care provider, advocate, consultant, educator, researcher, and quality manager as part of the EP Device patient population.
- Assist with the STS quality database, including data compilation and entry of quality metrics.
- Contribute to division/unit quality assessment and improvement programs using risk and quality management data.
- Apply nursing research to improve clinical practice and address nursing care problems within the patient population; participate in research activities as directed with other disciplines.
- Interact professionally with staff, patients, medical staff, peers, and others; maintain clinical expertise aligned with patient population requirements and current nursing/medical practice.
- Develop management and consultant skills aligned with position responsibilities and adhere to professional and legal standards of nursing practice.
- Maintain patient and staff confidentiality and foster a teamwork-oriented work environment to support recruitment and retention.

Education, Experience, and Certification
- Education: Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is required.
- Experience: Minimum 6 months providing direct nursing care or management/supervision of cardiovascular medical/surgical patients OR minimum 1 year providing direct nursing care/care coordination within an outpatient setting. Minimum 2 years of experience in cardiovascular nursing, cath/electrophysiology laboratory, CVICU, or cardiac step-down. Ability to collaborate effectively within a multi-disciplinary team.
- Certification/Licensure: Current BLS certification by start date and current nursing license in the State of Iowa by start date.
- Desired Qualifications: 3–5 years of clinical experience with pacemaker and ICD interrogations and reprogramming including remote monitoring; demonstrated competency in interrogation of pacemakers and ICDs; competence in in-person and remote monitoring of various pacing systems and implanted devices; experience in an academic medical setting is desired.
