The Department of Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for two (2) full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor positions in Architectural Design – Engaged Practice. Candidates should ground their design and creative work in innovative architectural practice and be prepared to teach at both graduate and undergraduate levels. Engaged Practice refers to design and creative work rooted in architectural practice that synthesizes contemporary issues and disciplinary knowledge to inform distinctive architectural sensibilities with a focus on building design. Candidates may be actively practicing or demonstrate a clear trajectory to engage practice as a critical mode of inquiry. Successful candidates are expected to show how buildings can expand the field by using design to address urgent issues such as climate, housing, materials, construction, social justice, or other critical topics. Responsibilities include core instruction in architectural design at both graduate and undergraduate levels, with emphasis on Foundational Studios and Integrated Design Studios. Candidates should be prepared to lead advanced design studios and offer seminar and/or lecture courses aligned with their area of expertise. Service to the department, college, university, profession, and broader community is essential. Demonstrated exemplary architectural work and the ability to disseminate work through appropriate venues are required. The Department of Architecture is housed within the College of Environmental Design (CED), and offers undergraduate and graduate degrees with programs in M.Arch, M.AAD, M.S., and Ph.D. For more information, please visit the department website. Basic qualifications
(required at time of application): Bachelor Degree (or equivalent international degree). Preferred Qualifications : One of the following by the start date is strongly preferred: a professional graduate degree in architecture (M.Arch or equivalent) or an undergraduate degree in architecture (B.Arch or equivalent) with an additional graduate degree (MA, MS, or Ph.D.).
