Overview
Library Assistant - Youth Services - Part Time. The Library Assistant provides essential support to ensure the efficient daily operations of the library, including assisting patrons with locating and checking out materials, maintaining organization of the collections, and helping users with basic technology needs.
Responsibilities
- Answer informational and directional questions in person and by phone.
- Assist visitors with circulation services including interlibrary loans, reserves, and library card applications.
- Assess and collect fines for lost or damaged materials.
- Inspect, clean, and perform minor repairs on returned materials.
- Sort and shelve library items, including materials in the Children’s section.
- Provide basic technology assistance to visitors of all ages, including computer access, online resources, Microsoft Office programs, and use of library equipment (photocopiers, scanners, fax machines).
- Help residents navigate the library’s online catalog and digital tools.
- Answer basic reference questions about library resources, including children’s collections.
- Attend staff meetings and participate in training sessions.
- Perform opening and closing duties, including basic cleaning, security, and tidying of public areas.
- May support general office and administrative functions as needed.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
High School Diploma, or its equivalent, plus six (6) months of experience working or volunteering in a public or school library; OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Knowledge: Library operations and the Dewey Decimal System.
Skill/Ability: Deliver quality customer service; accurately process materials and enter data into computer; process and repair books; pay great attention to detail; understand and follow instructions; demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication; operate standard office equipment, including fax machines, photocopiers and computers using standard word processing and data inquiry software; perform simple mathematical calculations; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, organizations, schools, and the general public.

Work Environment & Physical Conditions
- Must be able to frequently stand, walk, bend, reach, stoop, and kneel.
