Overview
Grand Central Publishing is looking for a highly motivated, energetic, and creative Publicity Manager or Senior Publicist, depending on experience. The role involves creating and implementing publicity campaigns for titles across Grand Central’s fiction and non-fiction lists, including major bestselling franchise authors/brands in the mystery/thriller space and expanding romance and sci-fi/fantasy categories.
Responsibilities
- Publicize approximately 15–20 titles per year, executing all aspects of a publicity campaign, including managing author tours, booking national and local media, overseeing travel arrangements, and producing events.
- Develop and maintain relationships with members of the press (broadcast, radio, print, digital, trades, podcasts, etc.) and seek out new media outlets and opportunities to expand the fiction list; brainstorm creative ideas to maximize exposure and sales.
- Work closely with authors on all aspects of publicity, including briefing authors for interviews and accompanying them to publicity engagements.
- Strategize media lists, create press materials (press kits, press releases, pitch letters, author Q&As, etc.), and pitch media.
- Manage select major franchise authors in the mystery/thriller space.
- Coordinate non-fiction campaigns in pop culture, history, science, sports, and memoir; fiction campaigns in mystery/thriller, women’s fiction, sci-fi/fantasy, and romance.
- Read and evaluate fiction and select non-fiction proposals for editors; provide prompt and thorough feedback; interact with editorial and marketing teams.
- Attend author proposal pitch meetings as needed.
- Mentor junior staff.
- Organize in-person and virtual media appointments; manage media database and appointment schedules for the GCP team.
- Develop and maintain relationships with booksellers nationwide and with off-site venues for lectures and events.
- Plan and execute author appearances, trade shows, media events, pre-sell bookseller events, and tours.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of publicity experience, preferably with high-profile authors and brands.
- Strong knowledge of national and regional media (electronic, print, broadcast) with established relationships with key media editors and bookers.
- Proven ability to manage and prioritize multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Knowledge of the media landscape and competitive market; strong relationships with bookstores.
- Ability to escort authors as needed, including domestic travel with authors.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and familiarity with media tools such as Muck Rack, Podchaser, Net Galley, and Edelweiss.
Compensation and Benefits
The compensation for this position is $65,000-$90,000. Salary can vary based on skills, experience, and location. Overtime may be required due to workload or special projects.
