Overview Graphic Designer at Chronicle Books — San Francisco or New York City office. Responsibilities Art direct and design books across Children’s categories (board books, picture books, YA, non-fiction, interactive books, etc.). Handle a range of Children’s categories, with interest/experience in graphic novels and/or licensed/brand-focused publishing preferred. Scouting, hiring, and art directing external illustrators and photographers; project-managing and designing projects; collaborating with in-house editorial, production, and marketing teams. Engage with the in-house design team across Children’s and Adult Trade categories; participate in the Children’s Publishing Group to build expertise, develop strategy, and generate new ideas for publication. Qualifications 4 to 5 years of experience in graphic design, including initial concept generation, comps, presentations, and preparation of electronic pre-press files. Portfolio demonstrating appropriate sensibility for children’s design. Focus on print-based design; emphasis on publication design and product design preferred. Proficiency in Macintosh environments; strong working knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator; ability to prepare files for press according to print specifications. Knowledge of offset printing techniques, including color balance. Strong organizational, communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills; ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments; teamwork and negotiation. Sound judgment toward Chronicle’s publishing design. Salary and Benefits Base pay range: $68,000.00/yr - $78,000.00/yr Hiring Salary Range: $68,000 – $78,000/yr. This range depends on education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, geography, and internal equity. Eligible for profit share plan.
