Job Description
Sarasota Magazine is a state and national award-winning city magazine, which for 46 years has been covering the people, issues, arts, food, politics and history that shape life in Sarasota and the surrounding region. We value great storytelling, great visuals and deep community engagement to tell stories that matter and that our readers cant wait to read.
Were seeking an energetic Associate Editor to join our editorial team. The ideal candidate has two-to-five years of editorial experience, loves narrative journalism and wonderful writing, has an unending curiosity about the way the world works and, finally, a passion for finding and telling the important and human stories behind our rapidly growing city.
Responsibilities
- Pitch, write and edit stories for both print and digital platforms
- Write engaging short features, service pieces, long narratives and web content
- Line edit and copy edit for voice, clarity, accuracy and AP style
- Assist with editorial planning and deadlines for monthly print issues
- Collaborate with designers and editors on layouts and headlines
- Contribute to newsletters and social media
- Attend community events and stay plugged into local culture and current issues
Qualifications
- 25 years of editorial experience (magazine, newspaper or digital)
- Strong writing and editing skills with excellent editorial judgment
- Comfortable editing for both print and digital
- Knowledge of AP style
- Organized, deadline-driven and detail-oriented
- Enthusiasm and curiosity for Sarasotas culture, people and stories
Bonus Points For
- Experience with Canva and Adobe Creative Suite
- Familiarity with Sarasota or Florida's Gulf Coast
- A portfolio that includes lifestyle, profile and narrative features
- Multimedia experience, including skills in photography, video and podcasting
