The Sol Blatt Jr. Law Library at the Charleston School of Law is seeking a Reference & Instruction Librarian to join our collaborative and service-oriented team. This is an entry-level position, ideal for recent graduates or those in their final semester of a library degree program who are eager to begin a career as an academic law librarian with a strong instructional component to the role.

Position Summary

The Reference & Instruction Librarian will provide in-library reference services and support legal and interdisciplinary research for students, faculty, and patrons. The role includes developing research guides and tutorials, conducting instructional sessions in law school courses, and leading in-library workshops. The librarian will also contribute to collection development and support faculty scholarship through advanced research consultations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver reference and research assistance to faculty, students, alumni, and the legal community.
  • Create instructional materials and lead formal and informal research instruction sessions.
  • Collaborate on interdepartmental instructional initiatives and faculty support.
  • Participate in collection development and prepare legal research guides and bibliographies.
  • Represent the law school at professional meetings and conferences.
  • Assist with exam proctoring and occasional evening hours.
  • Opportunity to teach as an adjunct professor (additional compensation provided).

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited institution (or equivalent).
  • Applicants in the final semester of their program may be considered if they can work in person.
  • Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited institution (or equivalent).
  • Strong legal research skills and familiarity with electronic and print resources.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other research technologies.
  • Commitment to service and teamwork.
