Overview

Curtis Memorial Library has an opportunity for a customer-focused professional to provide library services in Adult and/or Youth Services areas on a per diem basis. The successful candidate will have proficiency with digital literacy, extensive knowledge of current literature and information sources relevant to adult and/or youth patrons, and skill in providing in-depth readers’ advisory and information assistance. The Librarian will ensure a safe and positive environment for patrons and may serve as Person in Charge within the library.

Nature of Work

Welcomes patrons and sets the tone for a great library experience. Provides basic readers’ advisory and reference services to patrons in the adult, children, and teen areas. Proactively assists patrons in finding and using library resources and maintains collections and displays. Work is performed with some independent judgment and initiative.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provides comprehensive readers’ advisory; assists patrons in finding and selecting books and other resources and offers meaningful and age-appropriate recommendations
  • Checks materials in and out; renews and reserves materials
  • Responds to in-depth informational and specialty service questions
  • Assists and educates patrons in the use of library technology resources
  • Engages patrons in conversations about the programs and services available at the library
  • Assists patrons with basic computer needs, including printing, computer passes, email, social media, Microsoft Office applications, and online resources
  • Assists patrons in finding and selecting books and other resources
  • Offers meaningful recommendations of books and movies
  • Refreshes displays and keeps them looking neat and appealing
  • Places holds and interlibrary loans; provides instruction in using the library catalog
  • May provide Meeting Room orientation and AV assistance
  • May serve as a person in charge within the library
  • Opens and closes designated areas. Ensures a safe and positive environment for patrons and handles difficult situations adeptly and with tact
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Customer-focused and friendly
  • Ability to effectively communicate ideas and thoughts both verbally and in writing, including facility with public speaking
  • Ability to use diplomacy and tact to establish and maintain relationships with library patrons and employees
  • Familiarity with a variety of children’s and young adult authors and literature
  • Knowledge of child development and experience working with youth of varied ages
  • Ability to use resources and current library and office technologies relevant to the job duties, including Microsoft Office applications
  • Working knowledge of a wide variety of current literature, authors, and reference sources relevant to adult and/or youth patrons
  • Knowledge of child development and experience working with children (for YS area librarian)
  • Ability to use resources and current library and office technologies relevant to the job duties
  • Thorough knowledge and skill in digital literacy
  • Knowledge of search strategies and classifications systems
  • Knowledge and support of the principles of Intellectual Freedom
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring some bending, lifting, pushing, and walking; sufficient manual dexterity, ability to speak, and vision to perform job-specific tasks
  • Ability to work a varied schedule, including some weekends and evenings
  • MLS degree from an ALA-accredited school or pending degree

The Curtis Memorial Library is looking for two substitutes with availability to work Sundays. We would like to have a substitute to commit to two Sundays a month and another position for availability to work at least one Sunday a month. These positions will have the opportunity to work other sub shifts throughout the week, including Saturdays.

Substitute positions require availability for some evening and weekend hours. A commitment for each substitute would be to work at least one four-hour shift a month.

MLS degree, or degree pending in 2025 required; public library experience is strongly preferred. The pay rate is $26.50/hr. Sunday shifts will have an additional $5.00 per hour shift differential.

Substitute Librarian may be called to fill in long or short-term during regular staff absences.
