Overview

The County of Volusia is seeking an energetic, team-oriented Youth Services Librarian I/II with a strong public service commitment to provide library service and programming for children and teens, including those with diverse backgrounds and abilities. This position will be in the Youth Services section of the Edgewater Public Library.

Librarian I

  • Front-line, entry-level professional work in specialized areas of a regional or full-service library or independent work operating a small community branch.
  • Having met the minimum requirements, the preferred candidate will have at least one (1) year of experience working with children and teens.

Librarian II

  • Front-line professional work in Adult Services, Youth Services, Teen Services, or Circulation areas of a regional or full-service library or independent work operating a small, community branch or work cataloging at the Library Support Center.
  • Having met the minimum requirements, the preferred candidate will have at least two (2) years of experience working with children and teens.

Candidate Notes

  • Must be able to work nights and weekends.
  • If applicable, attach a copy of Master's degree/transcript in Library Science (MLS) from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license at the time of hire.

Librarian I - Responsibilities

  • Creates excellent customer experiences by providing an inviting atmosphere for library users and delivering positive and memorable library experiences.
  • Maintains good internal communications and strong working relationships with colleagues and supervisors regarding building, staff, service, and security issues.
  • May train, supervise, schedule, and review the performance of subordinate staff, student workers, and/or volunteers.
  • Under the direction of the supervisor, supports, plans, promotes, and executes in-house or virtual programs and/or outreach events for children, teens, families, and/or adults to achieve library objectives.
  • Provides prompt, courteous assistance to library users via face-to-face, desks, telephone, virtual, and electronic service options.
  • Provides reference and reader's advisory for library users.
  • Keeps abreast of new materials and promotes use of materials and services through various promotional tools.
  • Instructs community members on library resources and technology.
  • Answers questions about computer and e-reader usage.
  • Upholds county and library policies and the Library Code of Conduct.
  • Assists with processing, maintenance, and arrangement of collections (shelving, weeding, etc.).
  • Explains or demonstrates procedures for searching catalogs, databases, and the Internet.
  • Supports day-to-day operations of an assigned section or branch and is cross-trained in all areas of their assignment.
  • Promotes print and computer literacy for children, teens, and adults.
  • Uses the integrated library system and may assist with maintenance of library equipment, software, or hardware.
  • May be responsible for reserving and managing the branch's meeting room spaces.
  • May perform independent work related to the operation of a community or neighborhood branch.
  • May be responsible for daily and/or weekly money deposits.
  • Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
  • Responds to emergency situations and attends work regularly; participates in required trainings.
  • May be assigned to other county locations based on operational needs.
  • Performs work of all lower-level library classifications and other duties as assigned.

Librarian II - Responsibilities

  • Serves as person-in-charge in an assigned shift at a regional or full-service library and manages safety, security, and emergency issues.
  • Directs and supervises on-site vendors (security guards, day porter) as needed.
  • Promotes and educates the community about library services and collections through outreach programs to schools, childcare facilities, businesses, and other organizations.
  • Works with assigned library teams and contributes to services and programs.
  • Creates excellent customer experiences and maintains effective internal communications.
  • May train, supervise, schedule, and review subordinates and volunteers; may supervise makerspace activities.
  • May oversee selection and acquisition of collection materials in an assigned genre or format.
  • Supports, plans, promotes, and executes in-house or virtual programs and/or outreach events for children, teens, families, and/or adults.
  • Provides reference and reader's advisory; keeps abreast of new materials and promotes services.
  • Educates the community about library resources and technology.
  • Answers computer and e-reader questions; maintains information on library activities, facilities, rules, and services.
  • Upholds county policies, library policies, and the Library Code of Conduct.
  • Assists with processing, maintenance, and arrangement of collections (shelf-reading, shelving, weeding, etc.).
  • Explains procedures for searching catalog files, print and media collections, databases, and the Internet.
  • Supports day-to-day operations and cross-training across areas as directed.
  • Promotes literacy and uses the ILS and online databases; may assist with equipment maintenance.
  • Participates in collection development, ordering, and maintenance within policy guidelines.
  • May perform independent work related to a community or neighborhood branch and related cataloging duties at the Library Support Center.
  • May be responsible for money deposits.
  • Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances; respond to emergencies; attend work regularly and required trainings; may be assigned to other locations.

ADA/Physical and Environmental Requirements

Physical Demands: Ability to hear and listen, speak, and read; visual acuity required to operate equipment; ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds; ability to stand for long periods.

Mental Demands: Ability to read and comprehend manuals and policies; communicate clearly; perform basic mathematical and monetary tasks.

Environmental: Inside work environment.
