This role is with Springer Nature Group and relates to managing a portfolio of proprietary and society open access journals published under the npj brand within the Nature Portfolio. The npjs are fully open-access Nature Portfolio journals that span a range of research areas and are launched and run in collaboration with leading scientists. The role reports to an Executive Publisher and is based in New York, Jersey City, or Washington DC on a hybrid model.

About the Role

We are seeking an Associate Publisher/Publisher to manage a portfolio of proprietary and society open access journals published under the npj brand. The npjs are fully open-access Nature Portfolio academic journals that together span a wide range of research, from fundamental physics to clinical research to engineering. Each npj is targeted to a specific scientific community and is launched and run in collaboration with preeminent scientists. Responsibilities include management, strategic development and success of the individual journals within the Clinical Medicine field. This role involves liaising with internal staff, external journal editors, and the scientific community.

This role can be in our New York, Jersey City, or Washington DC offices on a hybrid working model.

Role Responsibilities

  • Develop journals to deliver a best-in-class author experience and foster engagement from Societies, Editors-in-Chief and Editorial Board Members (EBMs).
  • Drive growth and development of a group of open access journals as part of a defined portfolio within the Journals group.
  • Manage relationships with partner societies, including contract negotiations.
  • Develop strong working relationships with colleagues in production, IT and other departments to resolve problems for authors, editors and peer reviewers.
  • Understand and manage annual targets for journal submission, publication and transfer volumes and target turnaround times.
  • Ensure KPIs are monitored, reported and met, and take action as needed.
  • Manage annual Journal Development/Improvement Plans and oversee their implementation.
  • Resolve pre- and post-publication issues raised by staff, EBMs and readers (authorship, scope, ethics and consent, misconduct, policies).
  • Attend external meetings to build relationships with EiCs, EBMs, society partners, and the research community.
  • Understand trends in the communities served to respond appropriately.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with researchers.
  • Translate changes in the research and publishing landscape into proposals for new products and services.
  • Participate in cross-departmental projects and company-wide task forces.
  • Review new journal and commercial opportunities with Senior Management and contribute to proposals.
  • Represent the team in projects with Production, Sales, Marketing, Finance and other Editorial colleagues.

Experience, skills and qualifications

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent, preferably in a relevant field
  • Previous experience in academic publishing
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • IT systems-literate with a sharp eye for detail
  • Positive, proactive problem solving and ownership to drive tasks
  • Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues at all levels and as part of a team
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills
  • Ability to work independently within a global (virtual) team
  • Experience developing and maintaining productive relations with researchers
  • Strong time management and organizational skills; ability to meet deadlines and adapt to change
  • Diplomacy and assertiveness
  • Resourceful and proactive in addressing problems
  • Active, supportive team player
  • Ability to travel frequently

US Annualized Base Salary Range: Associate Publisher: $64,350; Publisher: $66,000. Salary offers vary based on experience, education and skill level. Salary ranges may differ from other countries when converted to local currency.
