Salary: The previously determined range for this position was $23.39/hr to $36.19/hr. Final rate offered will be determined by the collective bargaining agreement, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, and budget constraints. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a rate at or near the top of the full range for a position.

Position Summary
Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), the Nursing Technician delivers patient care utilizing the Relationship-Based Care model. The Nurse Technician provides care and takes initiative to improve patient outcomes by supporting Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care and standards of nursing excellence in clinical practice. Through therapeutic relationships with patients, families, self and colleagues, the Nurse Technician functions as an interdisciplinary team member who provides patient care and fulfills unit and organizational goals.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Assists with patient admission, transfer or discharge as assigned and supports the patient by performing activities of daily living, safely operating patient care equipment, promoting skin integrity and safety measures.
- Documents patient information in EHR (such as vital signs, nursing care provided, intake and output).
- Acts as a patient / family advocate by providing comfort, assistance and information and provides feedback to RN or LPN on patient care and condition as directed.
- Demonstrates a commitment to UI Health values through teamwork and effective communication in an effort to achieve quality outcomes, patient safety, customer satisfaction and a clean, safe and therapeutic environment.
- Participates in organizational, departmental and shared leadership activities; supports department and unit goals in daily behavior.
- Identifies recurring clinical practice and/or related unit problems and participates in problem solving and resolution.
- Collaborates with other staff to identify, promote and provide positive learning experiences for staff and students.
- Takes responsibility for continued professional growth/development by identification of learning needs and initiates strategies to meet such needs.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Removes peripheral IV catheters, disposes of in accordance with hospital biohazardous waste policy, observes site and notifies nurse of condition.
- Empties Foley bags, JP’s, and hemovacs.
- Specimen Collection as assigned by RN and following hospital policy for patient identification.
- Takes vital signs, accurate weights, and measures intake/output and documents accurately.
- Transports patients with necessary equipment to destinations within scheduled time frames, observing correct techniques.
- Performs proper hand-washing techniques before, during, and after patient care at all times.
- Ensures restraints are applied properly according to FHT policy/procedure.
- Provides patient care to an assigned group of patients, utilizing basic skills and knowledge.
- Performs procedural tasks and assists ADL, considering patient’s age and cultural/psychosocial factors.
- Observes and reports patient’s condition, activities and needs to licensed nurse accurately and in a timely manner.
- Demonstrated knowledge of basic patient care skills, clinic procedures, and equipment.
- Stocked and maintained patient care supplies and equipment.
- Assisted the RN with clerical duties, including answering phones and processing physician orders.
- Perform EKGs and assist with cardiac monitoring setup.
- Assist in receiving post-op patients: transfer from stretcher to bed, apply monitors.
- Obtain and record vital signs at intervals under RN guidance.
- Perform point-of-care testing (blood glucose, urine pregnancy tests, etc.).
- Prepare and stock PACU bays with necessary equipment and supplies.
- Assist patients with dressing, toileting, and ambulation when cleared by RN/PT.
- Monitor oxygen setup, suction equipment, and warming devices.
- Provide comfort measures: warm blankets, repositioning, emotional support.
- Escort discharged patients and assist families with belongings.
- Support infection prevention (linen changes, cleaning equipment between patients).
- Assist with IV discontinuation prep (RNs remove IV, NTs support with dressing).
- Track and communicate patient readiness milestones (voiding, oral intake, mobility).
- Draw Blood.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school graduation or equivalent
- Possession of a CNA license from an accredited institution/school/program. Illinois Department of Public Health - Health Care Work Registry
- Current BLS/CPR and other required unit-specific certifications.
- Current CNA certification
- Must have 3 years experience as a CNA in the Emergency room, ICU, Pre-Op or PACU
