VP of Development and Operations (Advanced Communications), McLean, VA. Location: Hybrid-Remote (preference for the National Capital Region); approximately 20% travel; location depending. Job Summary
We are seeking a dynamic and visionary leader to guide the Advanced Communications Company through its initial growth phase. The leader will develop and execute the strategic plan, secure funding, build a high-performance team, drive commercialization of plasma-enhanced ESA technology, and identify complementary opportunities to drive growth. Responsibilities Strategic Leadership & Vision: Develop and implement a comprehensive business plan to achieve strategic and financial goals. Define the company’s vision, mission, and values. Identify new market opportunities for plasma-enhanced ESA technology. Secure funding from venture capital, grants (e.g., SBIR/STTR Phase II/III), and strategic partnerships. Cultivate relationships with investors, government agencies, and stakeholders.
Team Building & Management: Recruit, develop, and retain a high-performing team of engineers, scientists, and commercial professionals. Foster innovation, collaboration, and accountability. Drive commercialization across defense, telecommunications, and aerospace. Establish strategic partnerships to facilitate market entry and accelerate sales. Oversee sales and marketing strategy to generate revenue and market share. Provide strategic oversight for product development, ensuring alignment with market needs and technical feasibility.
Technology Transitions & Manufacturing: Manage the transition from lab prototype (TRL 4/5) to deployable product (TRL 9) through iterative prototyping, testing, and qualification. Address technical challenges related to plasma ignition/sustainment, packaging, environmental robustness, and regulatory compliance. Establish scalable, cost-effective manufacturing processes and oversee supply chain, quality control, and logistics.
Regulatory & Legal: Ensure compliance with FCC/ETSI, MIL-STD-461, and FAA certifications; protect IP through patents and trade secrets.
Qualifications Eligible for a U.S. DoD security clearance.
Deep understanding of the advanced antenna market and competitive landscape across defense, telecommunications, and aerospace sectors.
Proven leadership as an executive, senior leader, or founder in a technology-driven, high-growth startup.
Strong technical acumen with the ability to articulate value propositions of complex technologies.
Experience in fundraising and investor relations with a track record of securing venture capital, grants, and strategic partnerships.
Demonstrated ability to build and manage high-performance teams; excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
Experience with government contracting; SBIR/STTR program experience is highly desirable.
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, physics, or related field; MBA or advanced degree preferred.
Preferred: experience with dual-use technology commercialization, DoD go-to-market strategies, and familiarity with MIL-STD requirements for environmental ruggedness and EMC; knowledge of telecom standards; aerospace/ satellite/comms experience.
Benefits & Compensation Salary Range: $200,000–$250,000 (dependent on experience).
