Overview

Lead Concept Artist role at Halo Studios. Halo Studios is the developer of the Halo series and part of Xbox Game Studios. We are looking for a Lead Concept Artist to help build the next generation of games and experiences in our sci-fi universe. The role involves collaborating with the Art Director and development teams to communicate the visual target and experience, with a strong emphasis on composition, color, and world-building across character, environment, industrial, and graphic design. The team values Halo legacy and a collaborative approach to expanding the universe.

Responsibilities

Work closely with the Art Director and Concept team to define the look of the project—from the general vision to specific designs.

Develop and maintain a strong understanding of the game universe and technology constraints.

Set clear design goals and deliverables to achieve a high-quality, cohesive experience across platforms.

Create clear documentation and review concept team documentation for creative alignment, consistency, and completeness.

Create illustrations of scenes, environments, props, characters, vehicles, and weapons with emphasis on composition, atmosphere, lighting, and material.

Develop key artwork and vision pieces, leveraging existing designs into world-class illustrations.

Provide guidance to the Art Director and participate in feedback during production.

Mentor earlier-in-career artists and assist in providing direction to external partners as necessary.

Participate in creative discussions, brainstorms, and reviews to strengthen cross-disciplinary collaboration.

This role requires 60% onsite work (Mon-Wed).

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree or Certificate in Design, Fine Arts, HCI, Visual Communications, or related art field AND 4+ years of art design or related art field experience in computer games or entertainment OR equivalent experience.

2+ years of people management experience (e.g., Lead Artist, Art Manager, Creative Director).

High proficiency with anatomical structure, industrial/architectural/graphic design, and strong art fundamentals.

Experience working in Unreal or other game engines.

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements, including Microsoft Cloud Background Check (upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter).

Preferred Qualifications

5+ years of experience in the entertainment industry

2+ AAA titles shipped

4+ years’ experience with related software (e.g., Photoshop, Blender, Unreal Engine, Maya, Substance Designer/Painter/ZBrush, SideFX Houdini, After Effects)

Collaborative growth mindset and openness to giving/receiving constructive feedback.

Compensation & Benefits Art M5 - The typical base pay range across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. Certain locations have different ranges (San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metro). The base pay range for those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
