Summary
The Staff Physician - Spinal Cord Injury/Disorders Service (SCI/D) is responsible for patient care, patient and family education, and supervision of resident physicians. The primary role involves evaluating patients in the SCI/D outpatient clinical setting. Most of the time is devoted to patient care and education, with remaining time allocated for performance improvement activities and research to enhance patient care and maintain proficiency in state-of-the-art rehabilitation and medical care. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Pending completion of training or licensing requirements may be considered for referral and tentative selection but not for hire until all requirements are fulfilled. Current VA-employed physicians who met the initial appointment requirements under previous standards are deemed to have met the basic requirements. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, per VA Policy. Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an accredited medical or osteopathic school. The degree must be from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year of graduation. License: Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or D.C. Residency Training: Completion of an approved residency program in an accredited core specialty leading to eligibility for board certification. Approved residencies include those approved by ACGME, AOA, or other programs deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee. Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA programs and meeting other requirements may be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and are appointed on an intermittent or fee basis, without independent practice privileges. Duties
Provide patient care, including outpatient primary care for SCI/D patients, and patient/family education. Participation in clinical research is optional. Evaluate patients primarily in outpatient settings and participate in performance improvement activities. Manage a panel of patients in collaboration with the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT), with panel size determined by VHA guidelines. Work at Audie L. Murphy VAMC, with some travel required. Certification by the American Board of Medical Specialties is preferred but not mandatory. Manage and rehabilitate patients with disorders across the spectrum of rehabilitation-related illnesses. Participate in on-call responsibilities, supervise residents, medical students, and Physician Assistants as needed. Perform administrative duties such as reviewing primary care needs, managing performance measures, and participating in hospital committees and quality activities. Deliver comprehensive outpatient primary care, consult other disciplines, and document all care in CPRS according to VA requirements. Obtain informed consent, provide education on medical conditions and treatments, and perform procedures as appropriate. Participate in weekend inpatient SCI/D rehab unit coverage and consult with other specialties as needed.
