Overview Research Scientist Graduate (Video Quality Analysis & Coding Strategy) - 2026 Start (PHD) As part of ByteDance's AVG Team, you will contribute to cutting-edge multimedia research (including image/video data processing, compression, and transmission) and transfer technologies into consumer products serving hundreds of millions of users. This role is targeted for a 2026 start; candidates should be available to onboard by the end of 2026 and clearly state availability and graduation date in their resume. Responsibilities Design, develop, implement, and optimize creative algorithms for image/video compression (including 2D video, Multiview video, 360-degree video, point cloud, light field, etc.). Design, develop, and implement novel algorithms for file formats, systems, and transport protocols. Research and develop image/video processing and objective metrics for subjective quality evaluations. Actively participate in related standardization work (MPEG, DASH, 3GPP, JVET, AVS). Monitor state-of-the-art algorithms in standardization work and in conference/journal papers. Draft standard contributions, patent applications, and academic papers. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Final year Ph.D. student or recent Ph.D. graduate in Computer Science, engineering or quantitative field. Strong computer science fundamentals (algorithms, data structures, software design) and problem-solving skills. Publications in top academic conferences or journals in the subject area. Rich experience and interest in multimedia standards (image/video compression, file formats, systems, transport). Familiarity with C/C++. Good team spirit and communication skills. Preferred Qualifications Strong understanding of state-of-the-art compression/transmission algorithms. Experience with JVET or AVS reference software. Experience in development of video coding standards. Experience with patent applications. Familiarity with Neural Network-based image/video coding and processing. Familiarity with Python, PyTorch. Compensation and Benefits Job Information: Compensation Description (Annually) The base salary range for this position in the selected city is $129,960 - $246,240 annually. Compensation may vary based on qualifications, skills, competencies, experience, and location. Base pay is part of the Total Package and may include discretionary bonuses/incentives and restricted stock units. Benefits vary by location.
