Responsibilities
- Promote and market library services.
- Assist patrons in the use of library facilities; explain library policies and procedures to the public, and library staff.
- Perform reference work at a professional level, according to level of incumbent.
- Select, order, maintain, and weed collections in assigned subject areas.
- Presents programming, story times, tours, and outreach events.
- May supervise, review work, and evaluate clerical and/or paraprofessional employees.
- Select, arrange, and promote the library through outreach activities.
- Keeps current with materials acquired by library; prepares statistics, reports, and programs.
- Designs, coordinates and implements library programs for special events.
- Index and catalog material.
- Provide readers advisory.
- Answer customer inquiries.
Minimum Qualifications
Librarian I
Education: Possession of a Master of Library Science (MLS) degree from an American Library Association accredited library school, preferably with some additional study in library, business and/or public administration.
Librarian II
Experience: One (1) year of experience equivalent to a Librarian I in Merced County.
Education: Possession of a Master of Library Science (MLS) degree from an American Library Association accredited library school, preferably with some additional study in library, business and/or public administration.
Some positions in this classification will be subject to criminal history background checks pursuant to the Human Resources Rules and Regulations, Section 2, B.

- Operate a personal computer and other office equipment.
- Communicate effectively with others in person, in writing, and over the telephone.
- Analyze data, interpret directions, procedures and regulations, and develop appropriate responses.

- Frequently lift and move with help, objects weighing up to 35 pounds.
- Occasionally lift and move with help, objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

- Frequently lift, carry, reach, push, pull, twist and manipulate large and small objects.
- Kneel, bend, twist, squat, balance and crawl.
- Frequent use of hand-eye coordination and repetitive hand and arm motion.
- Normal dexterity, frequent holding and grasping.
- Proficient use of computer software and email.
- Regular attendance is an essential function.
Knowledge Of
- Modern library/system organization and its objectives, procedures, techniques, and services.
- Principles, techniques, and practices of effective business, public and library administration.
- Books, sources, bibliographies, reference materials and classification systems.
- Techniques for effective community relations.
- Computer applications for library services.
- Children's library work and the field of children's literature.
- Library cataloging practices.
Ability To
- Work effectively with children and adults.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with other employees and the public.
- Provide reference, reader's advisory and children's services.
- Classify and catalog books and other materials.
- Provide direction, supervision, training and evaluation for assigned staff.
Benefits
Holidays & Leaves
Vacation: 10 days the first 5 years of continuous employment (limited to a maximum of 160 hours), 15 days in the second 5 years (max 240 hours), and 20 days after 10 years (max 320 hours).
Sick Leave: 0.0625 hours per regular work hour; 16 days (130 hours per year) with unlimited accumulation. Optional annual buy back of accumulated sick leave hours upon meeting criteria.
Holidays: Twelve paid holidays annually plus two optional holidays.
Bereavement Leave: Five (5) regularly scheduled workdays.

Vision Insurance - VSP: County pays 100% of employee premium and 50% for dependents.

Retirement: Deferred Compensation 457 Plan; MCERA defined benefit plan.
