Are you an experienced customer service professional who is passionate in connecting individuals with desired resources, whether for informational needs or for recreational interests? Wilmette Public Library is looking for a Part-Time Adult Services Librarian to join our talented team to provide superior general and in-depth reference and readers’ advisory services to our adult and young adult patrons. Under the direction of the Adult Services Manager, this tech-savvy and intellectually curious individual will develop and manage assigned collection areas and provide support to department programming, outreach, and engagement initiatives. As a priority, the successful candidate will be proactive in establishing a welcoming and service-forward experience, demonstrating both professionalism and deftness in meeting the diverse needs of the community.

Part-Time Adult Services Librarian Responsibilities:

  • Provide exceptional customer service to all patrons regarding general and library-specific inquiries
  • Provide in-depth reference and readers’ advisory assistance in person, by telephone, and electronically
  • Instruct and assist patrons with the use of print and digital resources
  • Develop, maintain, and promote an assigned portion of the Adult Services collections including books, periodicals, digital resources, and media
  • Facilitate and provide support for department program, outreach, and engagement initiatives
  • Maintain and apply a current knowledge of books, authors, and trends in library services
  • Maintain and apply a current knowledge of information technology and resources

Qualifications:

  • MLS or MLIS degree from an ALA-accredited institution
  • Minimum two years’ experience in public library service or equivalent customer service role
  • Enthusiasm for high-level customer service
  • Ability to conduct effective reference and readers’ advisory interviews in person, on the telephone, and online, and to provide accurate, verified information in a timely manner
  • Ability to demonstrate an adaptive knowledge of relevant reference resources, both print and digital formats, and to identify which offer most value to any given transaction
  • Ability to demonstrate strong familiarity with contemporary book culture and current trends in the delivery of library services
  • Ability to demonstrate broad practical experience with library software platforms including Integrated Library System (Polaris preferred) and subscription databases
  • Ability to demonstrate advanced knowledge and facility with digital platforms including Libby/OverDrive, Hoopla, and Kanopy
  • Ability to apply organizational guidance on materials selection and assessment to curate and maintain assigned collection areas
  • Ability to demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, working capably with individuals of diverse cultures, styles, abilities, and backgrounds
  • Ability to work efficiently and calmly during busy periods and with frequent interruption
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Proficiency in office software and applications

Hours

  • Approximately averaging 26 hours per week.
  • Weekly schedule includes:
    • Monday – Friday: four 1:00pm – 5:00pm shifts a week
    • Monday – Friday: one 1:00pm – 9:00pm shift per week
    • One weekend rotation per month:
      • Saturdays 8:45am – 5:00pm
      • Sundays 11:45am – 5:00pm
