Part-Time Deadline: Open Until Filled Creston-Dement Public Library District

The Creston-Dement Public Library Board of Trustees is currently seeking highly qualified applicants for the position of Library Director. The Library Director reports to the Creston-Dement Public Library Board of Trustees. The Library Director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of Library operations to serve the public needs efficiently and effectively.

We are seeking a candidate with strong communication and organizational skills and prior experience with library/office management would be ideal. This job requires a High School Diploma, with some college preferred. A degree in Library Science is not required. Responsibilities

The Library Director shall:

  • Personnel
  • Interview, hire, orient and train all library employees, including training in compliance with the Illinois Library Records Confidentiality Act.
  • Assign work responsibilities to all classifications.
  • Schedule all employees and approve work hours submitted for payroll, including vacation and PTO scheduling.
  • Conduct annual evaluations of all employees.
  • Conduct monthly staff meetings.
  • Supervise the library staff, directly or through appropriate delegation, to create a harmonious team environment.
  • Follow all Illinois Library District Laws and regulations.
  • Work with the Board of Trustees/Treasurer to create an annual Working Budget.
  • Implement and manage the approved budget.
  • Monitor and control expenditures based on the approved budget.
  • Work with the Library Board Treasurer to assure compliance with all publication requirements and deadlines for required annual financial and reporting documents.
  • Scan and forward bills and deposit slips to bookkeeping service weekly.
  • Administration
  • Maintain a work environment that encourages professionalism, innovation, and cooperation.
  • Maintain cordial relationships with county, schools, and other appropriate organizations in the Creston-Dement footprint.
  • Collect and maintain necessary statistics needed to prepare reports and recommendations for the Library Board for monthly and yearly analysis.
  • Prepare, with Board approval, the Illinois Public Library Annual Report (IPLAR) and District supplements as required by law.
  • Prepare, with Board approval, the annual Illinois State Library Per Capita Grant application.
  • Serve as FOIA officer and maintain Open Meetings Act certification.
  • Abide by the ALA Library Bill of Rights.
  • Oversee overall library maintenance, including equipment recommendations and building maintenance.
  • Direct the development, repair and maintenance of the Library building and monitor outside services like grounds-keepers and snow removal.
  • Participate in planning activities (Strategic Planning, Technology Planning, Space Development, Program Planning, Financial Planning).
  • Work with the Board of Trustees to create and maintain relevant Policies and Procedures.
  • Seek and apply for grants beneficial to the library.
  • Approve content on all promotional activities (print and online).
  • Collaborate with library associations and participate in RAILS activities and RSA consortia as applicable.
  • Attend off-site meetings as appropriate.
  • Develop the overall vision, goals and objectives of the library, incorporating input from the public, board and staff.
  • Develop and coordinate the implementation of major projects affecting library operations and services.
  • Resolve administrative and procedural emergencies.
  • Work with the Board President to prepare agendas and materials; attend monthly Library Board of Trustees meetings.
  • Work with staff to post board and committee agendas on the library website.
  • Develop and manage print and non-print collections, including selection, organization, maintenance, preservation, withdrawal, and disposal of materials.
  • Occasionally attend off-site meetings as needed.
  • Public Service
  • Be attentive to library trends and their local implications.
  • Be responsive to suggestions from within the Library District regarding programming and collection development, and provide programming and collection support to the district.
  • Advocate for library service when addressing patron complaints or concerns.
  • Assist with community events and organize staff for approved events to foster community relations.
  • Continuing Education
  • Monitor and participate in continuing education opportunities for the Library Director, staff, or Trustee training.
  • Encourage staff to pursue additional training related to their library employment.
  • Develop professional skills through workshops, conferences, affiliations, and literature to improve public services, facilities, technology, staff development, and board updates.
  • Clerical
  • Responsible for ordering and approving internal forms.
  • Prepare monthly reports for distribution at Board of Trustees meetings.
  • Prepare meeting agendas with the President of the Board of Trustees.
  • Maintain orderly files and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Ability to work with office equipment, computers, copiers, etc.

Qualifications

Required: High School Diploma; some college preferred. Knowledge and interest in library work. Professionalism and integrity in appearance and conduct. Thorough knowledge of public library administration. Ability to develop activities and programs and supervise others. Ability to manage budget guidelines.

Closed Sunday; Monday 12-5; Tuesday 10-6; Wednesday 10-6; Thursday 10-6; Friday 9-5; Saturday 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Salary: $20.50 per hour
