Music Director/Organist Job at Church of the Holy Spirit in Davenport

Overview

Position Purpose: The Music Director/Organist gives leadership to the traditional worship services of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church by using the organ to lift the congregation in music for the praise of God. Supervision: The Music Director/Organist serves under the supervision of the Pastor. Responsibilities: Subject to review and adjustment in conjunction with the Parish Council and Pastor.

Responsibilities

1. Select and provide organ music at weekend Masses, Holy Day Masses as deemed necessary by the Pastor, practices with cantors and choir, and special celebrations of worship where the organ is the primary instrument used.
2. Accompany vocalists and instrumentalists.
3. Select hymns appropriate in conjunction with the Pastor, which are reflective of the liturgical season and designated Scripture texts.
4. Be available to provide organ music for weddings and funerals held at the church when the organ is the primary instrument used. Fees for these services are not provided by the church, but are honorariums from couples and families. The use of the organ by another organist may be used only by special permission.
5. Provide qualified substitutes for all absences.
6. Schedule cantors and choir for Masses.
7. Recruit and advertise the ministry of choir and cantor within the Parish.
8. Lead a weekly choir practice (September-May) and their performance at one of the weekend Masses.

Working Conditions

1. The Organist shall rehearse sufficiently to maintain a high quality of music at the organ.
2. An annual performance review will be done with the Pastor.
3. Cooperate with all staff and musicians of the parish so that music ministry is enhanced within the life of the church.
4. The Organist shall seek professional relationships with other church musicians and keep abreast of developments in worship and liturgy through associations, continuing education, and professional church publications.

Skills and Qualifications

1. Sufficient keyboard ability to sight read hymns, liturgy, and easy anthem accompaniments.
2. Knowledge of Catholic worship tradition and a theological understanding of the church sufficient to appropriately select music and texts for traditional worship.
3. Experience as a “team player” in a church setting working with staff, musicians, and volunteers.

Conditions of Employment

1. Compensation for this position is an annual salary of $10,400.00 in semi-monthly installments of $400.
2. The Choir Director/Organist shall be entitled to earn additional income over and above the aforementioned salary from weddings and funerals when needed to accompany. The Choir Director/Organist will have first right of refusal for all weddings and funerals. Weddings and funerals are contracted through the Parish at $100.00 per wedding and $100.00 per funeral.
3. Candidate must be willing to submit to a background check and attend any training sessions (online or in person) as required by the Diocese of Davenport.
4. A three-month notice of resignation is requested.
