Overview

Scotsman Guide is seeking a detail-oriented and insightful Staff Writer to join our editorial team. This role involves writing, editing, and proofreading timely, accurate, and engaging content for mortgage professionals, private lenders, and real estate investors. The ideal candidate will combine strong editorial judgment with knowledge of mortgage finance, lending products, and economic trends impacting the housing market.

Base pay

$25.00/hr - $29.81/hr

Key Responsibilities

• Edit, write, and proofread 5-8 original news stories, in-depth features, and explainers each week for ScotsmanGuide.com.
• Contribute writing to magazine departments and copy-edit proof articles for clarity, consistency, accuracy, and adherence to AP style in Scotsman Guide’s monthly B2B magazine.

Research & Reporting

• Monitor industry news feeds, regulatory filings, lender announcements, white papers, data reports and press releases for story ideas.
• Translate technical mortgage concepts into clear, engaging content for a professional audience.
• Review, fact-check, and revise copy for grammar, clarity, consistency, and legal compliance.
• Interview subject-matter experts, economists, regulators, and industry leaders; integrate quotes and source data into robust reporting.
• Collaborate with editors on the content calendar, topical coverage, and long-range editorial plans.
• Assist in developing occasional deep-dive reports, white papers, or multimedia story packages.

WordPress & SEO

• Apply SEO best practices to boost organic visibility.
• Publish, format, tag, and schedule posts in WordPress; upload images and infographics as needed.
• Track content performance using tools such as Google Analytics or CMS dashboards and provide data-informed insights.

Compliance & Standards

• Stay current with loan products, secondary markets, and mortgage regulations.
• Maintain consistent brand voice, messaging, and editorial style across all content.
• Ensure all content is accurate, compliant with regulatory guidance, and aligned with Scotsman Guide’s brand standards.

Production Support

• Source and license imagery or charts in coordination with the design team.
• Support the editorial production process to meet monthly goals and daily timelines.

Qualifications

• Prior experience writing for a B2B trade publication or financial media outlet (preferred).
• Working knowledge of mortgage products.
• Bachelor's degree in journalism, communication, finance, or related field.
• Minimum of 3 years of related experience.

Schedule & Benefits

Full-time, 8-hour days, Monday through Friday. Includes one hybrid work-from-home day per week (Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday).
