Overview

Technical Director, Traffic Engineering – WSP in the U.S. (New York City, New York). Senior role supporting and managing complex and technical projects across Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and transportation IT. This position focuses on leading project delivery, staff development, and providing technical guidance for local, state, and regional clients.

Responsibilities

  • Support or manage complex ITS and transportation IT projects from initiation through design, deployment, testing, monitoring, and operations and maintenance.
  • Ensure alignment with clients and stakeholders, proactively identify and mitigate risks, maintain high-quality deliverables, implement quality reviews, manage version control, and track resolutions. Prepare and present project progress using reports and dashboards; monitor budget, schedule, scope, and communications to meet client expectations.
  • Lead ITS design projects focused on traffic management systems, corridor management technologies, roadside devices, and real-time data collection and analysis.
  • Oversee broader transportation IT initiatives including cloud-based IT infrastructure upgrades, software development lifecycle for transportation applications, data governance and analytics, and network security best practices.
  • Provide high-level technical input on design specifications, calculations, reports, and plans related to ITS projects.
  • Stay current with emerging ITS technologies, industry best practices, and relevant standards.
  • Lead multi-disciplinary project teams including internal staff, sub-consultants, contractors, and vendors; foster trust, transparency, and accountability.
  • Manage internal groups or external vendors, negotiate contracts, and monitor performance to client specifications.
  • Coordinate with internal and external partners, including cross-discipline teams, government agencies, and stakeholders.
  • Present complex technical and project information to executives, client teams, and public forums.
  • Contribute to development of technical proposals, scopes of work, and budgeting for projected work.
  • Help build and grow the firm’s ITS practice in the specified regions; mentor staff and support technical development.
  • Adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies; exercise ethical decision-making regarding funds and resources.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Computer Science, or Information Technology, or equivalent experience.
  • 12+ years of demonstrated project management and design experience in ITS or related transportation IT projects.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in New York or able to obtain reciprocity within 6 months of hire.
  • Proven experience managing complex projects with budgets, schedules, and technical requirements.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, and other design software.
  • Strong understanding of project management methodologies (Agile, Waterfall, Scrum) and proficiency with tools (MS Project).
  • Demonstrated leadership of cross-functional teams and ability to network with clients and industry professionals.
  • Excellent written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks under deadlines.
  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Experience on projects in New York, New Jersey, and/or the Northeast.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to health, safety, and harassment policies.
  • Flexibility to adapt to varying schedules; occasional travel may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with analyzing, developing, and deploying TSMO/ITS programs for DOTs.
  • Recognition for technical excellence and thought leadership in ITS and innovative transportation technologies.
  • Active engagement in relevant industry organizations.
  • CT, NJ PE licenses; experience involving traffic operations, signal design, timing, DOT experience.
  • Knowledge of traffic engineering principles, traffic signal design, signage, pavement markings, and micro-simulation modeling.
