The New York Times is seeking a video journalist based in Los Angeles, California to help broaden the department’s coverage of the state and help stay on top of global news developments. You will be focused on breaking and continuing news coverage in a range of visual formats, from reporter on-camera videos to short-form news videos and video-rich articles.

You will be expected to become familiar with our process for turning clips for our breaking news blogs or produce text-on-screen packages that immediately immerse our audience in the scene. You should have experience and passion for reporting on stories from California and the U.S. West. You have experience with video verification and social sourcing. This is an in-office position, based in Los Angeles, California and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Source, script and edit news video packages for our site and off-platform
  • Produce breaking news stories independently or in collaboration with colleagues across the newsroom
  • Pitch regularly and independently report on possible story opportunities
  • Use news wire services such as AP and Reuters to acquire material as well as chase UGC
  • Write succinct, accurate and compelling video scripts and copy
  • Use video verification and open source reporting techniques to develop stories and fact-check scripts and visuals
  • Set up and monitor live feeds, and add text and graphics as needed
  • Monitor the news day across core areas of coverage in California, U.S. West and globally
  • Experiment with different forms of vertical and mobile visual storytelling
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
  • This role reports to a Senior Producer in the L.A. Bureau

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of journalism experience (preferably in a digital video or broadcast newsroom)
  • Proficient in Adobe Premiere Pro, and able to edit quickly and accurately
  • Demonstrated understanding of the video production process
  • Ability to meet fast deadlines and adapt to a daily, unpredictable news production environment
  • Strong editorial judgment and writing skills, with a passion for finding original, visual journalism opportunities in competitive news moments
  • Social media platform expertise

Preferred Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of domestic and global current events, with experience covering news in California
  • Experience with OSINT reporting techniques and UGC video verification
  • Strong editorial judgment and writing and research skills, with a passion for finding original, visual journalism opportunities in competitive news moments
  • A foundational knowledge of legal, ethical, copyright and usage issues for visuals
  • Well-versed in the world of social and digital media, with a keen eye on what competitors are doing and what new tools are being used
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends

The position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY. The annual base pay range for this role is between $113,270.67 - $135,000 USD.
