Job Title: Part-Time Managing Editor

Industry: Publishing / Medical Journals

Location: Washington, DC (Remote)

Assignment Type: Part-time, open-ended contract

Pay: $24–27/hour depending on experience

Work Schedule: 25–30 hours per week; flexible within standard business hours (must be available for a weekly call on Tuesdays at 7am)

About Our Client:

Our client is a nationally recognized organization dedicated to advancing knowledge through research and publishing. They are seeking a skilled Managing Editor to provide editorial oversight and operational support for one of their peer-reviewed journals.

Job Description:

The Managing Editor will oversee the day-to-day editorial process, supporting authors, reviewers, and editorial board members to ensure the efficient handling of manuscripts and publication timelines. This role will partner closely with the Editor-in-Chief, senior editorial staff, and publishing teams to maintain the quality and timeliness of journal content.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage the full lifecycle of manuscript submissions, including peer review coordination, revisions, acceptance, and preparation for publication.
  • Support the Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Board with communications, meeting preparation, and manuscript decision dissemination.
  • Monitor production schedules, ensuring deadlines and quality standards are consistently met.
  • Respond to author, editor, and reviewer inquiries in a timely, professional manner.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (marketing, communications, digital publishing) on content initiatives, communications plans, and online postings.
  • Generate reports on journal status and performance as requested by leadership.
  • Assist with special projects such as conference video interviews, website testing, and new publishing innovations.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 3 years of experience in scholarly publishing, preferably with peer-reviewed STM journals.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; professional and collaborative approach.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite and familiarity with online publishing systems.
  • Attention to detail and ability to work independently as well as in a team.

Preferred:

  • Experience in the medical publishing field.
  • Familiarity with data analytics and reporting.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally, if needed.
