Position Description
Advertised Job Summary The Research & Instruction department in the Thomas Cooper Library at the University of South Carolina seeks a librarian with experience in academic and /or health libraries. As a unit, we value collaboration while also empowering each librarian to work independently. The successful candidate in general research help and instruction responsibilities, while also working to build relationships with their assigned academic departments. Instruction experience is required and experience in Health and/or Life Science fields and in systematic reviews is preferred.
The Librarian participates in University Libraries’ liaison program in support of the teaching and research endeavors of disciplines in the sciences and health sciences as assigned.
Essential functions include
- Partnering with faculty to integrate research skills into the curricula and develop collections which sustain and advance the department’s research goals;
- Designing and teaching instructional sessions and workshops in a variety of formats, as well as creating tutorials, guides, and other digital learning objects to develop and enhance students’ research and literacy skills;
- Providing research consultations;
- Seeking opportunities to develop and strengthen relationships between the library and assigned departments as well as across the university community;
- Keeping up with trends and developments in the research methodologies and practices of areas of responsibility;
- Collaborating with colleagues in Research & Instruction in first year instruction, general research and reference assistance, and overall outreach efforts;
- Participating in professional development and continuing education activities; and
- Performing other related duties as assigned to meet the goals of the Libraries and University.
Required Education and Experience
- MLIS from an ALA-accredited program (or equivalent). The combination of another graduate degree and relevant experience will be given equal consideration.
- Experience working in academic libraries
- 2+ years instruction experience
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities/Competencies
- Ability to communicate effectively with users at all levels of expertise across disciplines
- Projects an approachable and customer service-oriented attitude
- Ability to collaborate effectively and work on teams
- Ability to effectively and efficiently learn new resources
Preferred Qualifications
- Second master’s or PhD in a STEM or other data-dependent field
- 2+ years’ experience working in research libraries
- Experience and/or training in conducting systematic reviews
- Demonstrated involvement in professional activities, including evidence of ability to contribute to librarianship, research, and service as well as capacity for leadership within the profession.
- Experience in developing and producing workshops and tutorials
