Overview

This is a part-time position that works no more than 19 hours per week. Must be able to maintain a flexible schedule to meet the needs of faculty and students. This is a front-line customer service position whose purpose is to be the first point of contact to welcome and help students, faculty, staff, and librarians in the library.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Provide assistance with technology and equipment, including but not limited to computers, photocopiers, scanners, printers, software (Microsoft Office and more), and eLearning systems.
  • Respond to directional and routine questions, both in-person and over the telephone.
  • Use SirsiDynix WorkFlows to check items in and out, renew items, pay fines, and perform other circulation tasks.
  • Assist patrons with course reserves.
  • Assist patrons with locating and retrieving materials from the patron’s campus library and other NCTC campus libraries.
  • Assist patrons with accessing the NCTC Library Databases and perform limited searches for factual information.
  • Refer research and citation questions to the librarians.
  • Issue TexShare library cards and NCTC community user library cards.
  • Shelve items using the Library of Congress Classification system.
  • Process library materials.
  • Maintain daily library statistics.
  • Assist with opening and/or closing the library.
  • Enforce library policies and rules and maintain a quiet and clean environment.
  • Make independent judgments in the absence of librarians and other assistants.
  • Assist with the Library’s General Access Computer Lab.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

Required Education

Required Skills & Abilities

  • Familiarity with computers and other office equipment (e.g. printers and photocopiers).
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel).
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Maintain a flexible schedule to meet the needs of faculty and students.

Preferred Skills & Abilities

Customer service experience. Previous library experience.

Hours & Compensation

Hourly rate – $15/hr with no more than 19 hours a week.

Schedule options below:

  • Monday through Wednesday, 1:30 PM - 6:00 PM, and Thursday, 12:30 PM - 6:00 PM
  • Monday through Wednesday, 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM; Thursday, 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM; and Friday, 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM.

Subject to criminal background check. Resume is required in addition to application. It is not required that library aides be current or former NCTC students. A written Library of Congress Call Number test will be administered at the time of the interview.
