Under general supervision, the purpose of the Senior Library Assistant is to coordinate, provide, and act as a team lead for customer service, maintenance, technology, and programs in the Library Department.
- Provides assistance with and coordination of various operations in the library, including schedules, training, designating tasks, staff, and volunteers, as assigned, and providing customer assistance with library services and programs.
- Oversees and provides customer service within assigned service areas, which may include: the circulation desk, reference desk, outreach services, youth services, or makerspace area and equipment.
- Plans, creates, and leads educational, fun, and engaging programs utilizing a variety of materials, venues, and methods as approved. Works collaboratively by planning and implementing various programs, including summer, family, technology, outreach, and youth programs, and general library events.
- Spreads awareness of library services, activities, programs, and resources by staying informed on library offerings and creating flyers, brochures, and social media posts as assigned.
- Handles daily customer service and materials operations including checking items out, guiding patrons through self-check machines, answering phones and patron inquiries, resolving patron issues, signing up new library patrons, processing returns, placing and processing holds, modifying patron accounts, and collecting and recording payments.
- Upkeeps, troubleshoots, and assists patrons in library technology and digital resources such as, but not limited to, library computers, printing, self-check machines, catalog stations, databases, online reservation systems, and makerspace equipment.
- Assists with weeding, collection projects, and cataloging items as assigned.
- Assists with the daily functions of the library as needed such as emptying the book drop, inspecting and checking returned items in, sorting and shelving materials, completing minor book repairs, and processing materials. This includes monitoring supplies and requesting needed supplies.
- Collects and submits statistical data and reports as assigned.
- All other duties as assigned.
Functional Duties (as assigned)
- Technical Services
- Under supervision, oversees the daily customer service functions of library technology and support to the patrons including, but not limited to, printing, computers, makerspace equipment, and library machines in accordance with policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Leads the design, functions, services, hours, and programs provided by the makerspace.
- Oversee daily operations of the makerspace and makerspace equipment, including space organization, calendar management, management of inventory, and, as applicable, basic maintenance of equipment as prescribed by the Information Technology Department.
- Works closely with Library and Information Technology Department staff regarding technology or equipment issues, changes, and/or technology expansion projects. Keeps up to date with new technology and trends in order to recommend future additions/upgrades to the makerspace.
- Plans, creates, and leads educational and fun programs to assist with library technology services such as one-on-one technology help, information sessions, workshops, classes, hands-on learning projects, and other programs for patrons of different ages and learning styles as approved.
- Assists with cataloging and catalog management such as item records, bibliographic MARC records, and OPAC data in the library’s integrated library system as assigned.
- Assists Librarians in the oversight of the interlibrary loan program.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited college or university is required.
- One (1) year of experience in a public library setting is required.
- Experience as a supervisor or team lead is preferred.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.
- Fluency in Spanish preferred.
- Knowledge of and ability to follow city and departmental practices, policies, procedures, systems, and federal, state, and local laws, regulations, codes, ordinances, and best practices relating to public libraries.
- Ability to regularly interact with others and exchange and receive information, providing effective and tactful customer service, and work independently with a high level of discretion.
- Ability to interact with people in a professional and congenial manner.
- Ability to effectively supervise and lead staff and volunteers in a proactive, appropriate, and productive manner.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Knowledge of information-finding strategies and reader’s advisory.
- Knowledge of automated circulation system functions (Koha).
- Knowledge of Dewey Decimal System classification.
- Knowledge and familiarity of library materials across various subject areas, fiction and non-fiction, authors, and titles.
- Ability to communicate in a clear, effective, and concise manner, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to troubleshoot simple technology issues on printers, scanners, and computers.
- Ability to learn and perform basic operational, technical, and office processes.
- Knowledge, skill, and ability to utilize telephone, fax machines, computers and applicable software and databases daily including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office, Adobe suites, Koha, and social media accounts.
- Ability to be organized and have efficient management of time and deadlines.
- Ability to quickly type and input data (35 wpm).
- Ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias, to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions, and measurement and to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
- Ability to be punctual and attend work regularly.
Special Requirements
Ability to work weekends and evenings is required.
Licenses & Certifications
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with acceptable driving record as established by the City of Midlothian driving standards.
Work Environment
Works primarily in climate-controlled office environment. Mobility within an office environment is required. Physical demands are primarily sedentary in nature and require prolonged periods of sitting, walking, standing, and bending/stooping. Physical demands require occasional lifting and carrying up to 35 lbs., pushing/pulling objects up to 100 lbs., climbing stairs/ladders/step stools, overhead reaching, and working in confined spaces. Work may cause light fatigue of eyes and fingers because of routine use of motor senses, and occasional exposure to dust, odors, and mechanical and electrical hazards.
