ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Greets and assists the public in the use of library facilities; answers questions; performs bibliographic searches; assists library patrons in book selection; demonstrates use of library catalogs and other reference materials; checks materials in/out; reserves books; processes overdue materials and fees; dispenses library cards; and helps patrons in use of public access computers and other electronic devices.
- Returns library books and materials to appropriate shelving areas; shelves or places materials in appropriate order; reads labels to ensure materials belong to assigned branch and are arranged in proper order; and searches for missing materials as needed.
- Assists in controlling status of books in circulation; processes new books and reference materials; checks spine labels; enters catalog data into computer; checks on overdue books; prepares overdue notices for unreturned items; may order and process materials for various branches; and may assist in the repair of books.
- Prepares books for delivery to branch libraries; processes intra-library and inter-library loans.
- Receives payment of fees and fines; issues receipts and change; and balances daily cash receipts following cash handling procedures.
- Assists in the preparation and presentation of programs, activities, special events, and displays; participates in outreach opportunities.
- May train, assist, and oversee volunteers with their assigned duties.
- Prepares routine reports, correspondence, book lists, and other material; updates database and/or reference cards and other files; and maintains files and records.
- Operates standard office equipment and may utilize CRT or PC terminals in performing assigned duties.
- May operate county vehicle.
- Provides exceptional customer assistance, problem-solving, and/or complaint resolution by all forms of communication.
Education and Experience
- An equivalent combination of relevant training, education and experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One (1) year of experience in customer service or library operations.
Licenses and/or Certificates
- Must maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Knowledge of departmental policies, plans, and procedures.
- Knowledge of modern office practices, plans, and procedures.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other job-related computer programs and software applications.
- Knowledge of business English, spelling, and arithmetic.
- Knowledge of Dewey Decimal system.
- Computer skills to include data entry, typing and record maintenance and internet skills.
- Accuracy and attention to detail.
- Skill in effective communication, both orally and in writing.
- Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
- Skill in the use of office equipment such as a computer, multi-line telephone system, scanner, fax machine, and copier.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and reports.
- Ability to provide internal/external guidance and customer assistance via all forms of communication.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to use computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.
- Ability to author reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with managers, service providers, other employees, and the general public.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Stooping, standing for at least 2 hours, hearing, talking, crouching, seeing up close, standing, walking, sitting, finger movement, pulling, kneeling, repetitive motions, lifting, reaching, grasping, pushing. Frequent lifting of up to 25 pounds; occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is primarily performed in an indoor, climate-controlled environment and is usually absent from disagreeable elements (e.g., irate customers, extreme noise, heat, odors, heights and/or dust).
