Overview
Our government client is seeking an experienced UI/UX Designer on a hybrid 12+ months renewable contract opportunity in Austin, TX.
Role: UI/UX Designer
Job Description: Understands business objectives and problems, identifies alternative solutions, and performs studies and cost/benefit analysis of alternatives. Analyzes user requirements, procedures, and problems to automate processing or to improve existing computer systems. Confers with personnel of organizational units involved to analyze current operational procedures, identify problems, and learn input/output requirements. Writes detailed descriptions of user needs, program functions, and steps required to develop or modify computer programs. Reviews system capabilities, specifications, and scheduling limitations to determine if a requested program or change is possible within the existing system. The role of UI/UX designers is central to improving accessibility, usability, and responsiveness of the agency eligibility systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead user research initiatives and journey mapping to gain deep insights into user interactions and identify opportunities for optimization.
- Demonstrate UX Design experience with an extensive portfolio including user research, information architecture, wireframing, prototyping (low and high fidelity), and usability testing.
- Develop wireframes, prototypes, and visual hierarchies in accordance with accessibility guidelines and branding standards.
- Collaborate with Code for America and cross-functional teams to apply industry best practices in UI/UX design.
- Engage in discovery workshops, feedback sessions, and sprint planning to align design decisions with business objectives.
- Utilize tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, and Hotjar; implement usability testing, responsive design, and SEO optimization strategies.
- Experience with AI/ML interfaces: design user interfaces for systems with AI/ML, focusing on explainable AI (XAI) and human-AI interaction principles.
- Design for complex systems with regulatory requirements, particularly in government services, healthcare, or finance.
- Data visualization: present complex data and AI insights clearly and concisely.
- Empathy and user advocacy: advocate for user-centered design principles.
- Collaboration and communication: effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and present design solutions to stakeholders.
- Understanding of accessibility standards: knowledge of WCAG and other accessibility guidelines.
- Bonus: experience with eligibility determination systems or similar rule-based, data-intensive applications.
Minimum Requirements
- 4+ years hands-on experience designing user interfaces and experiences for enterprise systems using Figma, Adobe XD, and Sketch.
- 4+ years demonstrated ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical teams, translating business needs into intuitive design solutions aligned with accessibility and branding standards.
- 4+ years applying UX design principles to create responsive and accessible web and mobile interfaces.
- 4+ years creating wireframes and prototypes that support agile development cycles.
- 5+ years preferred: designing diagrams and visual narratives to communicate timelines, workflows, and system architecture.
- 3+ years preferred: facilitate design workshops and feedback sessions with stakeholders.
- 3+ years preferred: Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, HCI, computer science, or related field. Equivalent experience may be substituted.
- 3+ years preferred: strong multitasking skills to manage multiple design streams across concurrent work efforts.
