Instructional design director

Position Overview

The 30+ year company supports the petrochemical and manufacturing industry domestically and internationally and is positioned along the Gulf Coast providing training, occupational medicine, and innovative solutions to industry. The Instructional Design Director is responsible for the development of multimedia courseware using a variety of software and scripting languages.


The Instructional Design Director leads the strategic development and execution of multimedia training programs with trust, integrity, excellence and respect across the organization. This role is responsible for developing and overseeing instructional design standards, managing cross-functional development teams, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality, learner-centered content that supports organizational goals and compliance standards. The position plays a key role in shaping the future of training delivery through innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Essential Job Responsibilities
  • Ability to provide strategic leadership that defines and implements instructional design frameworks aligned with an organization’s mission and goals.
  • Utilizes HASC owned software and templates as well as other templates to develop comprehensive multimedia courses.
  • Codes the courseware, integrating artwork, test, video, audio and question files within the course framework.
  • Creates custom subject matter scripts for implementation into courseware, working directly with customers, produces course outlines.
  • Gathers and modifies artwork, develops and enhances audio files, and creates custom question files on specific topics for designated comprehension levels.
  • Builds tables, frames, forms, and spreadsheets for courses, departmental reporting or organization.
  • Utilizes new technologies to enhance services, including Internet-based software and scripting, verifying content and formatting have a professional and sharp appeal.
  • Monitors course performance, gathers feedback from customers and technical staff on course development needs.
  • Strategic Planning and execution with a demonstrated ability to define project scopes, develop detailed work plans, and drive execution aligned with organizational goals.
  • Lead diverse teams across modalities and departments, managing stakeholder expectations, and fostering collaboration to meet deadlines and deliverables.
  • Risk and resource management strategies to identify potential issues, develop mitigation strategies, and optimize resource allocation for maximum efficiency.
  • Meets with customers on the specifics of projects, new technologies, and project deadlines.
  • Identifies, coordinates and provides ongoing education for the instructional design team that will help innovate and inspire progress within skillsets
  • Proficient in project management in applying appropriate project management frameworks to ensure adaptability and control throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Experience in managing budgets and complex timelines, consistently delivering projects on time and within scope.
  • Able to coordinate, provide and receive feedback from quality assurance testing and coordinate necessary changes.
  • Prepares multimedia courses to be delivered in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Assists other departments as needed

Preferred Skills & Qualifications
  • Masters or Bachelor’s Degree in Instructional Design, Learning Design or Training preferred
  • Experience in Industrial Settings, Safety or Safety Training preferred
  • Must enjoy working with the public and have a strong initiative to work independently,
  • Must be able to translate, educate and learn detailed procedures.
  • Proven ability to work under pressure and make effective decisions.
  • Cross-train and assist other departments as necessary.
Requirements
  • Ten years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Thorough understanding and ability to use instructional software, Windows Microsoft Office programs, Internet and Windows Explorer.
  • Proven organizational skills
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals,
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of Directors, clients, customers, and the general public
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Willingness to work at different locations if the company needs arises
Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to read, talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle training equipment and tools, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. The employee occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

Reporting Responsibilities

The Instructional Design Director reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer. This position does have direct reports.
