Minimum Qualifications

A relevant terminal degree, such as a Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA), Master of Historic Preservation (MHP), or Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS), is required.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Affairs, the CED Librarian directs the Owens Library and Resource Center (OLRC), a community-centered space combining library and IT resources to support design and research for CED faculty, staff, and students. Library and IT staff work collaboratively on OLRC operations and direction. The print collection includes 5000+ volumes related to the built environment, with emphasis on landscape architecture, plants and gardens, Georgia community design, urban planning, and historic preservation. OLRC is included in the statewide ILS (Alma). UGA Libraries provide cataloging, acquisitions, and circulation support for print items; online databases and ebooks are provided through UGA Libraries. The position includes student support through instruction and reference, and the successful candidate will provide research and editorial support for students, particularly for thesis and practicum writing.

Future directions for the OLRC include ongoing digitization projects, increasing the presence of CED faculty and student publications in ScholarWorksUGA, digitizing and curating CED archives, and contributing new ideas for the position.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage acquisitions within OLRC, procuring materials in print and digital formats, monographic series, streaming video, and other resources.
  • Design and implement workflows using current technologies and standards.
  • Apply professional best practices and stay current with trends in acquisitions, scholarly publishing, and academic librarianship.
  • Support collections budget management and maintain accurate acquisitions data.
  • Assist with fiscal transactions related to the budget and develop expenditure data for collection decisions.
  • In collaboration with CED faculty, staff, and leadership, hire, train, and evaluate student employees; coordinate workflows and responsibilities.
  • Set performance goals aligned with Library objectives and communicate them clearly.
  • Develop training workshops on acquisition processes for team members and library staff.
  • Negotiate terms with vendors and publishers; maintain strong working relationships.
  • Resolve issues related to orders, receiving, and payments with vendors.
  • Collaborate with various library departments and demonstrate flexibility and cooperation.
  • Engage in library-wide planning and governance and contribute to collaborative decision-making.
  • Pursue research and scholarly activities and participate in professional organizations.

Salary, Benefits, and Additional Requirements

Salary at 75% time: approximately $45,000–$52,500. UGA librarians are non-tenured faculty with a $2,800 annual professional development allotment. Benefits include health and retirement plans, dental, vision, tuition remission via USG’s Tuition Assistance Program, relocation assistance, 21 days of annual leave, 12 days of sick leave, and 13 paid holidays.

Preferred education, experience, licensure, and/or certification: background in library or archival processes and project management; familiarity with the disciplines covered by the College of Environment and Design.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies

  • Excellent analytical and communication skills
  • Understanding of Integrated Library Management Systems (e.g., Ex Libris Alma or FOLIO)
  • Ability to supervise, mentor, and support professional growth among library staff
  • Familiarity with data/metadata standards (e.g., COUNTER, MARC)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Power BI
  • Ability to navigate copyright, fair use, and rights management issues
  • Understanding of open access trends in scholarly publishing
  • Strong project management skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with attention to detail

Typical office setting. Lifting up to 20 lbs (books).
