WUSF is a leading source of news, information, and cultural enrichment for West Central Florida. We reach over one million people monthly through our NPR news station WUSF 89.7, Classical WSMR 89.1 & 103.9, and an extensive digital presence including live streaming, podcasts, newsletters, and social media. As a department of the University of South Florida, we have a dedicated team of 80 professionals and a budget of $10 million. Our main studios are on the USF Tampa campus, with additional broadcast and production facilities on the USFSM and USFSP campuses.

Position Summary Statement

WUSF seeks curious and creative journalist to serve as producer for the station\'s premier public affairs program and podcast. Ideally, this is a highly organized, self-starting journalist committed to delivering comprehensive coverage of issues and experiences that provide insight and perspective to the community. This role represents a vital component in producing a daily radio program and video podcast that serves the greater Tampa Bay region.

The producer will demonstrate expertise in coordinating the production elements of both audio and video content for broadcast and YouTube distribution. Primary responsibilities include identifying compelling topics, securing and coordinating guest appearances, and developing stories across broadcast and digital platforms. The producer will work effectively across multiple media formats, including live call-in programs, social media content, pre-produced audio segments, and digital interview formats.

Journalists in this role must possess demonstrated news judgment and comprehensive knowledge of journalistic ethics and standards. The position requires maintaining rigorous editorial standards and upholding the integrity of WUSF\'s news operations. The producer will have experience in live broadcast production, possess audio and video editing qualities and understand multi-platform content creation. This is a full-time position requiring availability five days per week, with occasional weekend responsibilities as programming demands require.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor\'s degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field and two years of directly related experience; or a Master\'s degree in the fields listed above. Four years of vocational/technical training and experience may substitute for the Bachelor\'s degree requirement.
  • Active driver\'s license and ability to drive to assignments.
  • Based at WUSF\'s Tampa studio.
  • Senate Bill 1310 – The Florida Senate: substitution of work experience for postsecondary education requirements. A public employer may include a postsecondary degree as a baseline requirement only as an alternative to the number of years of direct experience required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with WUSF\'s public affairs show team to develop a daily, live public affairs show and digital podcast. Produce engaging audio, video, and digital stories to examine issues impacting people who live in the greater Tampa Bay region.
  • Participate in show logistics, including identifying, researching, booking, and pre-interviewing guests. Assist the host and Executive Producer in researching topics, writing scripts, and show promotion.
  • Participate actively as a reporter for WUSF\'s public affairs show by telling stories residents want to know about their hometown. Engage with people who don\'t have a relationship with traditional media to discover potential topics and to develop sources and ideas. Explain critical issues to help people understand their community and feel connected. Provide the audience with human-interest stories that resonate.
  • Assist in breaking news that impacts the greater Tampa Bay region.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including attending station events, participating in fundraisers, and representing WUSF at community events.

Special Skills or Training

  • Radio, digital and public media production experience is a plus.
  • This is an essential personnel position.
