Our mission is to create a world where work empowers a better life, and it starts right here at Gusto. We’re committed to building a collaborative and inclusive workplace, both physically and virtually. About Design at Gusto: Product Design at Gusto is made up of over 70 creative, collaborative people who care deeply about our mission to empower small businesses and their employees. We’re a cross-functional team focused on Design, Research, Writing, Ops and Front-end Development who work with Product, Engineering, Data, and Marketing to design, build and ship experiences that make a difference. We are advocates for thoughtful, crafted, and inclusive experiences and believe great design can make hard things possible, even delightful. About the team: At Gusto, we simplify the complex world of business operations with a comprehensive People Platform that includes payroll, benefits, time tracking, and more. We are committed to world-class customer experience. Our Tax Credits team is building an emerging-market product to guide customers through tax credit regulations, unlock financial opportunities, and extend their runway. Our ambition is to drastically simplify tax credits to drive customer value and revenue. About the opportunity: As a Staff Product Designer for Tax Credits, you’ll scale a product in its early days. Many small businesses leave tax credits unclaimed due to confusion and compliance complexity. You will design beautiful, intuitive end-to-end experiences that simplify this journey and make it approachable, user-friendly, and stress-free. This role is high-visibility and high-impact, balancing technical, compliance, and service challenges to unlock customer and business value. Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day: Partner with cross-functional partners to define a long-term UX vision for Tax Credits and link it to Gusto’s broader strategy. Shape product strategy, roadmap, team OKRs, and project priorities through a design lens. Deepen understanding of customers’ tax credit needs through research, data, and hands-on discovery. Design and ship both new and iterative experiences that deliver value and raise the craft bar. Contribute to Gusto’s design community by sharing skills, perspective, and mentorship. Champion our design system and platform standards, evolving them through product work. Here’s what we’re looking for: 8+ years of Product Design experience, with a track record of leading design direction across teams and product areas. Experience designing simple, intuitive solutions in complex or technical domains—ideally fintech, platforms, or services. Ability to partner with PMs and Engineers to shape roadmaps and system-level decisions, ensuring better outcomes. High bar for craft, hands-on involvement to ensure thoughtful, high-impact solutions reach customers. Holistic thinking to design cohesive customer journeys spanning digital products and human support touchpoints. Thrives in ambiguity, leads through action, and is motivated by real customer impact. Open to constructive debate, with strong opinions held loosely to help teams align quickly. Passionate about Gusto’s mission and empowering small businesses through world-class financial tools. Our cash compensation range for this role is $146,000/yr to $183,000/yr in Denver and most remote locations, and $177,000/yr to $222,000/yr in San Francisco, Seattle, & New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including candidate experience and may vary from the amounts listed above. Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees based in those locations are expected to work from the office on designated days, approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto’s subsidiary, whose office is in Scottsdale. Note: The San Francisco office expectations cover both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas. When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable internet connection is required, including non-office days for hybrid employees.
