Summary
Performs a variety of routine and complex clerical and cashier duties to provide customer services at the city's public library. Position entails direct communication requiring skill and judgment with upwards of 100 customers per shift.

This position is an at-will temporary employment position. Less than 20 hours per week.

Essential Functions
Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Maintains clean and orderly appearance of library premises and circulation desk supplies.
  • Operates library's automated circulation system to register new library customers, to check materials out and in, to search for books and other materials and to place holds.
  • Explains library rules and fines and charges for overdue, damaged or lost materials.
  • Processes and accepts payments for overdue, damaged or lost materials, replacement library cards and for photocopies and computer print outs.
  • Provides assistance to customers using the library's copier, printer and public computers. May include explaining e-mail set up and operations, assisting with printing documents and helping set up word processing documents. May be asked to assist with personal reading devices such as a Kindle or Nook reader or I-pad.
  • Performs clerical and administrative work such as answering phones; maintaining and compiling monthly activity data. Assists in processing new library materials. Processes and prepares overdue notices and other direct correspondence via print or e-mail to customers.
  • Receives, organizes and distributes incoming mail; responsible for maintaining current magazine and newspaper display and for filing back issues.
  • Examines returned books and materials for damages; makes repairs as needed.
  • Sorts and re-shelves library materials. Visually checks for accurate and orderly sequence, re-shelving misplaced books and searches for lost or missing items.
  • Prepares book displays; creates posters, bibliographies, bookmarks, bulletin boards, games, and promotional displays.
  • Responds to customer concerns in person, on the telephone, and online.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or required.
Knowledge of:
  • Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Dewey decimal system and library cataloging procedures.

  • Maintaining accurate records.

  • Interacting tactfully and professionally with City staff, outside agencies, and the public.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.


Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED equivalent AND one (1) year of customer service or clerical experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Physical Demands/Working Environment
Work is performed at City library facilities. May be required to lift and move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
