What You’ll Do

The Graphic Design Artist will perform complex design, graphic, multimedia, print, and communications work for the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) Marketing & Public Outreach Division. You will combine creative design expertise with communications support to develop impactful visual and multimedia content. You will be responsible for producing and managing agency creative assets, including digital graphics, publications, print materials, and interactive media, while ensuring brand consistency and high production quality. This position works under general supervision with moderate latitude for initiative and independent judgment.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Plan, design, and produce graphics, multimedia content, and interactive materials for print and digital platforms.
  • Review and approve agency design proofs and internal drafts for consistency, accuracy, and quality, ensuring that all creative deliverables adhere to the agency’s brand guidelines.
  • Plan and develop the writing, layout, and design of the monthly agency newsletter as well as other print and digital publications.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the communications and print vendors, coordinating production schedules, proofs, and quality control to ensure all materials meet agency visual standards.
  • Assist in creating graphics for social media channels and agency website pages to boost engagement and visual appeal.
  • Assist with the preparation and maintenance of agency style guidelines to ensure consistent branding.
  • Under the guidance of the Director of Communications, work with senior staff, program directors, and administrators to create public information and educational materials.
  • Follow all TDA policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications for This Position (The application must state how each of the following qualifications are met - resumes do not take the place of the required state of Texas application which must be completed in CAPPS or WIT).

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in graphic design, fine arts, journalism, public relations, communications, or a related field. (One year of work experience related to the essential duties may substitute for one year of college).
  • Two (2) years of professional design experience.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, etc.).
  • Experience with online design websites such as Canva or Flipsnack.
  • Experience in writing, editing, and producing a variety of communication materials.
  • Experience in brand development, including the design and production of logos and related visual aspects.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with social media management tools (i.e., Hootsuite, Tweetdeck, similar).
  • Experience managing and creating content for social media platforms in a professional capacity.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of graphic and multimedia design; of non-computer-based and media graphics production methods, techniques, and equipment; of animation; design principles including typography, color theory, layout, and composition; of printing processes; and of publishing industry standards and operations.
  • Skill in the use of graphic design software and multimedia packages.
  • Ability to plan the preparation of graphic design and multimedia design projects; to design and produce graphics and interactive media materials; to communicate design standards and brand guidelines effectively; to exercise sound judgment and discretion; and to maintain the highest level of confidentiality.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

Normal office work environment and may have exposure to dust and environmental allergens consistent with normal business activities and human contact. Mostly sedentary in nature but may involve walking; standing; pulling and pushing; kneeling, stooping, and bending; performing tasks requiring fine motor skills and coordination; and safely lifting and carrying items weighing up to 30 pounds. Must be able to work extended periods at a computer and may require working extended hours and some evenings and weekends, as needed. May involve travel (up to 10%).

Telework & Work Hours

The agency does not offer telework. TDA employees are required to be physically present for work.

The agency’s core business hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. TDA also provides limited customer service between 6:00-8:00 a.m. and 5:00-6:00 p.m.
