SPED - Adaptive-Communication-Social Skills Teacher

Teacher Special Education Adaptive-Communication-Social Skills (ACSS) – purpose: provide support to the instructional process as a teacher with responsibility for developing special education students' success in academics, interpersonal skills and activities of daily living; supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas; developing lesson plans and delivering group and individual instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with other teachers, professionals and administrators; responding to inquiries from students' parents or guardians regarding instructional program and student progress.

This job reports to the Executive Director of Special Education and Building Principal.

Essential Functions

  • Assist in early recognition and prevention of educational problems.
  • Adapt classroom work for providing students with instructional materials that address individualized learning plans within established lesson plans.
  • Administer developmental testing programs and/or subject-specific assessments for assessing student competency levels and/or developing individual learning plans.
  • Administer, under supervision, first aid and assistance to medically fragile children (e.g. tube feeding, toileting, diapering) for providing appropriate care for children as assigned.
  • Advise parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for communicating expectations; student’s achievements; developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
  • Assess student progress towards objectives, expectations, and/or goals for providing feedback to students, parents and administration.
  • Collaborate with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents and community resources for improving overall quality of student outcomes, achieving classroom objectives in support of the school improvement plan.
  • Counsel students for improving performance, health status, problem solving techniques and a variety of personal issues.
  • Demonstrate methods required to perform classroom and/or subject-specific assignments for providing an effective program that addresses individual student requirements.
  • Direct assistant teachers, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student workers for providing an effective classroom program and addressing the needs of individual students.
  • Instruct students to improve success in academic, interpersonal and daily living skills through a defined course of study.
  • Manage student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
  • Monitor students in a variety of educational environments for providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Participate in meetings as needed to convey and/or gather information required to perform functions.
  • Prepare a variety of written materials (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records) for documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirements.
  • Report incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse) for maintaining student safety and adhering to Education Code and school policies.
  • Respond to inquiries from a variety of sources for resolving issues and providing information/direction.
  • Respond to emergency situations for resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Support classroom teachers in the implementation of established curriculum and/or individual student plans.

Qualifications

Experience: Job related experience is required.

Education: Masters degree in a job-related area.

Licenses/Endorsements: Designated Subject Matter Endorsement; Low Incidence Special Education Endorsement; Continuing Educ. / Training Clearances; Maintains Certificates and/or Licenses; Criminal Background Clearance.

FLSA Status: Exempt

Salary: Determined by placement on teacher salary schedule.
