We are part of the Texas Newsroom, a statewide public media collaboration with NPR that allows us to provide even richer journalism and programming.
Summary: TPR’s Managing Editor is responsible for the newsroom’s digital operations, from copy editing to story selection on TPR.org and across multiple platforms – including newsletters and social media. The Managing Editor is expected to have their finger on the pulse of San Antonio and South-Central Texas. As a newsroom leader, they identify the editorial priorities for the day, communicate the plan internally, initiate assignments and organize cross-platform teams to deliver on deadlines. The ideal candidate prioritizes the audiences’ information needs, is highly organized and communicative, and can produce and edit high-quality coverage across a range of issues. This Managing Editor works closely with other editors as well as producers and reporters in the newsroom to coordinate TPR’s daily needs with longer-term enterprise, features, on-demand products, and investigations to make sure content shines across platforms. The managing editor plays a critical role in ensuring our content is inclusive and adheres to internal style guides.
The ideal candidate will have experience leading an editorial team in a daily deadline environment, strong digital publishing experience, a willingness and track record of creating space for creativity as well as delivering consistent, meaningful feedback to everyone on their team. A passion for the mission of public media is essential.
Responsibilities
- Leads the digital news portion of TPR’s morning news meeting, identifying daily news priorities and opportunities for enterprise content.
- Leads radio portion of the meeting as needed.
- Edits articles and other for-publication materials with text (newsletters, videos, photo captions, graphics, databases) for grammar, syntax, and style, as well as for formatting, SEO, and legality.
- Ensures that all copy adheres to established guidelines.
- Upholds and communicates standards for fair and independent journalism.
- Researches the accuracy of information, as needed.
- Assists with visual requests as needed.
- Creates content from radio broadcasts as needed.
- Manages multiple requests and deadlines.
- Manages story selection on TPR.org to ensure we are reaching the widest possible audience with our journalism.
- Plays an active role in strategic and organization-wide discussions, including efforts to grow a loyal digital audience for our news organization.
- Supervises multiple members of the newsroom.
- Conducts regular check-ins with direct reports and provides consistent feedback.
- Fosters professional development among direct reports, identifying opportunities for continuous learning and skill enhancement.
- Participate appropriately in station fundraising and sponsorship activities and live events.
- Collaborates with the Texas Newsroom on coverage planning, including participation in editorial planning meetings.
- Fulfills administrative obligations related to assignments, including filing prompt and accurate program information/summaries, maintaining contact with and keeping the team informed about assignments, keeping appropriate files and submitting timely expense reports.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field, or equivalent experience.
Experience: Must have at least 8 years of journalism experience.
Skills:
- Strong management skills, including ability to teach, coach, and advance skills of those under direct supervision
- Ability to encourage creativity and high editorial standards.
- Fluent in AP style
- Advanced knowledge of SEO, particularly for headlines
- Understanding of the emerging field of engaged journalism and ability to use non-traditional approaches to community engagement
- Experienced working with Grove or equivalent news content management systems.
- Ability to see opportunities for tapping audience expertise and other news resources.
- Ability to develop and communicate editorial vision and direction.
- High EQ and a willingness to listen.
- Ability to develop complex story ideas that provide analysis and add context.
- Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to solve problems creatively.
- Ability to effectively execute multiple assignments on deadline.
- Flexibility, ability to respond to changing priorities.
- Experience reporting or editing in Texas is a plus.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus.
- Must have a valid standard Class C driver’s license.
Physical Requirements
- Using fingers to make small movements such as typing or picking up small objects.

- Able to hear average or normal conversations in person or by phone.
- Frequently and regularly use the wrists, hands, and fingers.
- Average, ordinary visual acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents or other materials.
- Sedentary work; sitting most of the time. May have to lift folders, files, papers, audio/video equipment, and other items weighing up to approximately 25 lbs.
