Florida State University College of Music invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Music Theory, a 9-month faculty member at the tenure-earning rank of Assistant Professor. Appointment will begin August 2026.

The College of Music at Florida State University is the largest university-based music program in the Southeast and one of the largest in the nation. We are home to over 600 undergraduate and over 300 graduate students, representing nearly every state in the nation and 26 foreign countries. Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate music theory courses from among current offerings and/or in the candidate’s area of expertise.
  • Maintain an active agenda of research and publication in the field of music theory.
  • Participate in university and professional service activities, including service on committees, student recruitment and advising, and administration of area exams. Participate in professional service activities nationally and internationally as appropriate.

Qualifications

  • A completed doctoral degree in Music Theory or equivalent at the time of appointment.
  • A commitment to the recruitment of outstanding students and to fostering an environment that contributes to the culture, vibrancy, and diversity of the university community.
  • A strong record of scholarly achievement and ongoing research is preferred. We are seeking a dynamic teacher and scholar whose academic interests complement those of our current faculty.

Salary

Competitive, commensurate with experience.
