Overview

Pullen Arts Center reopened in 2021 following an extended closure for complete renovation and expansion, which also expanded to pottery studio operations to include 4,280 sq ft of space on two floors, 7 electric kilns and one gas kiln. This position is part of a team of two Pottery Studio Coordinators and a Pottery Studios Manager.

Responsibilities

  • In coordination with the Pottery Studio Manager, load and unload student and patron pottery into and out of the studio kilns in a timely and safe manner.
  • Document all firings, perform basic studio troubleshooting and maintenance, mix studio glazes, keep the studio clean and organized.
  • Create content for the monthly studio user newsletter, assist with planning and implementation of studio socials, and assist in firing the gas kiln.

Qualifications

  • Candidate must be at least 21 years of age. A pleasant attitude, good customer service skills, independence, flexibility, organization, reliability, effective communication skills and creativity are essential.
  • Candidate must have pottery experience, including basic experience mixing glazes, loading and unloading kilns, and generally keeping up a pottery studio.
  • Candidate must be able to lift 25 lbs regularly and 50 lbs occasionally. Must have awareness of safety issues common in pottery studios and best practices. Must have the ability to responsibly wear a respirator and other required PPE.
  • Previous experience working in a community studio is a plus. Previous experience firing a gas kiln is not required, but the candidate must be willing to learn.
  • 2+ years’ experience working with clay
  • 1+ years managing a pottery studio (home or community studio)
  • Understanding of basic glaze chemistry and characteristics of clay bodies
  • Understanding of wheel throwing and hand building techniques
  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  • Professional oral and written skills
  • High level of motivation, flexibility, and organization
  • Enthusiasm for working with and supporting other potters
