Overview
Variant Collaborative is a boutique design studio based in Chicago, IL, with projects focused in hospitality, retail and multi-family interiors. We are currently seeking an Intermediate Interior Designer with a minimum of 4–7 years of professional hospitality design experience. We are looking for someone with great growth potential or who is already a self-starter. Educational Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design from a CIDA accredited program. 4–7 years of professional experience in commercial interior design. Minimum 3 years of experience in hospitality design, with participation in at least two projects from concept through construction administration. NCIDQ Certification is preferred, but not required. Technical Skill Set Requirements
Proficient in Revit, AutoCAD, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat, SketchUp, Enscape, Bluebeam, and BIM 360. Ability to collaborate within a team environment. Demonstrates growing proficiency in hand sketching, conceptual strategy, drawing set development, furniture and millwork documentation, and construction administration support. Good understanding of building and accessibility codes. Ability to produce accurate construction documents, including floor plans, elevations, and sections, with a working knowledge of architectural, structural, and MEP systems. Willingness to learn and take on new technical responsibilities; additional credentials will be taken into consideration upon salary evaluations. Professional Responsibilities
Lead projects simultaneously under the guidance of a Team Lead or Principal. Actively support design staff and interns by answering questions, modeling processes, and contributing to a culture of collaboration. Manage small-scale projects or parts of larger projects with growing independence. Assist in the Construction Administration phase, including RFIs and submittals. Execute delegated tasks efficiently and communicate progress to team leads. Complete project documentation more independently and with technical accuracy. Take increased ownership of assignments and proactively communicate progress. Proactively solve problems and move work forward with minimal oversight. Conduct site visits, participate in field verifications, and assist with installations. Stay informed about current design trends, materials, and technologies. Maintain organized project documentation and adhere to company standards. Participate in sourcing materials and furniture selections. Help maintain and organize materials library and vendor contacts. Demonstrate strong communication, time management, and problem-solving skills. Present design ideas to internal teams and clients with increasing confidence. Coordinate with consultants, contractors, and vendors as directed. Accurately track hours and consistently submit in a timely manner. Contribute strategic design input with consideration to client goals and standards, timelines, and project budgets. Show flexibility and a team-focused attitude when shifting between leadership and support roles. Deepen technical skills across tools, documentation standards, and construction phases. Manage time, deadlines, and shifting priorities with consistency and reliability. Interpersonal Expectations
Collaborate effectively with team members and respond positively to feedback. Communicate clearly and professionally with internal teams and external contacts. Take initiative in resolving challenges and identifying alternate solutions. Demonstrate consistent reliability in managing time efficiently and completing tasks within assigned deadlines. Willingness to learn from the team and Principals, and seek guidance when needed. Exhibit professionalism in punctuality, work ethic, demeanor, and presentation. Represent the firm in a positive manner in the office, during vendor meetings, through client interactions, and at industry events.
